Maolan Nature Reserve In Libo

Maolan National Nature Reserve ancient karst forest in Guizhou China

Located in the southeast of Libo County, Qiannan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, Maolan National Nature Reserve is one of China’s most remarkable natural reserves. Covering approximately 20,000 hectares, the reserve has a forest coverage rate of 91.59% and preserves one of the most complete subtropical karst primeval forests in the world.
Known for its wild beauty, unique geological formations, and extraordinary biodiversity, Maolan is a rare example of a subtropical karst ecosystem preserved in its original state.
Established in 1987, Maolan National Nature Reserve was included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 1996, recognizing its outstanding ecological importance and scientific value.

A Rare Subtropical Karst Primeval Forest
Located in the central subtropical zone, Maolan is famous for its spectacular karst landscapes formed through millions of years of geological evolution. The reserve contains diverse karst formations, including caves, stone peaks, sinkholes, cliffs, and valleys, making it an important site for geological and ecological research.
The region receives abundant rainfall, with an average annual precipitation of more than 1,700 millimeters. The warm and humid climate, combined with rich soil conditions and complex terrain, creates an ideal environment for dense forests and diverse plant communities.
Fallen leaves cover the forest floor throughout the year, supporting a rich ecological cycle and maintaining the vitality of this ancient forest ecosystem.

Rich Biodiversity and Rare Species
Maolan National Nature Reserve is often described as a natural botanical treasure house. During early scientific surveys, nearly 1,000 plant specimens were collected, including more than 500 tree species.
The reserve is home to many valuable and rare plants, including:
* Ginkgo trees
* Chinese tulip trees
* Yew podocarpus
* Libo bamboo, a unique bamboo species found in China
Rare wildlife habitat in Maolan National Nature ReserveThe untouched forest also provides a natural habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Rare animals living in the reserve include:
* Rhesus monkeys
* Musk deer
* Silver pheasants
* Various amphibians and reptiles
* Numerous protected insects and other species
The area’s rich biodiversity makes it an important refuge for wildlife conservation and scientific research.

Unique Karst Forest Landscape
The most fascinating feature of Maolan National Nature Reserve is the combination of ancient forests and karst landforms.
Towering trees, thick shrubs, and climbing vines grow densely across the landscape. Many limestone rocks created by water erosion are covered with mosses and other plants, forming a beautiful natural scene.
One of the most distinctive sights is the phenomenon of tree roots growing directly on exposed rocks. Over time, some roots penetrate deep into the limestone and become integrated with the rock itself, creating a unique doline karst forest landscape rarely found elsewhere in the world.
The interaction between forests, rocks, water, and wildlife creates a mysterious and breathtaking environment that feels like a world untouched by time.

Visit Maolan National Nature Reserve
For travelers interested in nature, ecology, photography, and outdoor exploration, Maolan National Nature Reserve offers an unforgettable experience. Unlike more developed tourist destinations, Maolan preserves the atmosphere of a true wilderness area where visitors can discover ancient forests, spectacular karst scenery, and the incredible diversity of Guizhou’s natural environment.
Together with nearby attractions such as Libo Xiaoqikong Scenic Area, Maolan provides an ideal destination for exploring the unique landscapes and ecological treasures of southern Guizhou.
