Hongfenghu Red Maple Lake

Red Marple Lake Scenic Area in Guizhou

Located about 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of Guiyang, Red Maple Lake Scenic Area (Hongfeng Lake) is one of the most beautiful natural attractions on the Guizhou Plateau. Known as the “Pearl of the Guizhou Plateau,” it is considered the most charming of the three major lakes in western Guizhou, together with Baihua Lake (Hundred Flowers Lake) and Dongfeng Lake (East Wind Lake).
Famous for its clear waters, green mountains, colorful forests, and ethnic cultural villages, Red Maple Lake is an ideal destination for travelers looking to experience the natural beauty and cultural diversity of Guizhou.

The Largest Artificial Lake on the Guizhou Plateau
Red Maple Lake is the largest artificial lake on the Guizhou Plateau, covering a water surface area of approximately 57.2 square kilometers (22 square miles). The lake is about twelve times larger than the Ming Tombs Reservoir in Beijing and six times the size of the famous West Lake in Hangzhou.
The entire scenic area covers around 240 square kilometers (93 square miles), including the lake, surrounding mountains, forests, and cultural attractions.
The lake gets its name from the many red maple trees growing on the surrounding mountains. Every autumn, the maple leaves turn brilliant shades of red, creating a spectacular landscape that contrasts beautifully with the blue water and green hills.

Four Scenic Areas of Red Maple Lake
The Red Maple Lake Scenic Area consists of four main sections: North Lake, South Lake, Rear Lake, and Ethnic Minority Villages. Each area offers different landscapes and cultural experiences.

North Lake – Islands and Historical Relics
North Lake is the smallest section of Red Maple Lake and is famous for its many beautiful islands, including Bird Island, Snake Island, and Tortoise Island. Along the lakeshore, visitors can also explore an ancient tomb complex dating back to the Western Han Dynasty, adding historical interest to the natural scenery.

South Lake is known for its fascinating karst caves, including General’s Cave, Fishing Cave, and Underground Cave. These caves showcase the unique geological features of Guizhou and provide visitors with opportunities to explore the region’s underground wonders.

Rear Lake – Peaceful Countryside Scenery
The Rear Lake area is famous for its tranquil rural landscapes. Roads and walking paths along the lakeshore allow visitors to enjoy leisurely walks while admiring the beautiful combination of mountains, water, and traditional countryside scenery.

Ethnic Minority Villages Around Red Maple Lake
One of the highlights of Red Maple Lake is its collection of traditional ethnic villages. Visitors can experience the unique architecture and customs of Guizhou’s minority communities, including:
* Miao traditional stilted houses (Diaojiaolou)
* Bouyei stone houses
* Dong drum towers with covered bridges
The Dong drum tower, located near the lake, can be reached by boat. From the tower, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding lake and mountains.
The ethnic villages around Red Maple Lake preserve traditional lifestyles, festivals, architecture, and hospitality. Following local customs, villagers warmly welcome visitors, offering an authentic opportunity to experience Guizhou’s rich ethnic culture.

Visit Red Maple Lake Scenic Area
With its peaceful waters, colorful maple forests, unique karst landscapes, and diverse ethnic traditions, Red Maple Lake Scenic Area is one of the best places to visit near Guiyang. Its convenient location also makes it easy to combine with other famous Guizhou attractions, including the Dragon Palace Scenic Area and Huangguoshu Waterfall.
For travelers seeking a relaxing escape surrounded by nature and culture, Hongfeng Lake offers an unforgettable experience of the beauty and diversity of Guizhou.
