Gaozeng Dong People Village
Located about 8 kilometers along the road to Zhaoxing Dong Village in southeast Guizhou, Gaozeng Dong Village is a charming traditional settlement that offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the culture and architecture of the Dong ethnic group.
Gaozeng consists of three connected villages and has a history of more than 600 years. With a population of around 2,000 residents, approximately 90% of whom are Dong people, the village preserves many traditional customs, wooden buildings, and cultural traditions.
Surrounded by beautiful mountains and peaceful countryside, Gaozeng is an excellent destination for travelers looking to explore the lesser-known ethnic villages of Guizhou.
A Cultural Heritage Village in Southeast Guizhou
Because of its long history, traditional architecture, and picturesque natural environment, Gaozeng was the first village in southeast Guizhou to be recognized as a “cultural heritage area.”
The village is especially known for its traditional Dong-style wooden houses, which reflect the architectural wisdom and lifestyle of generations of Dong people.

Preserving Traditional Dong Architecture
In 1988, Gaozeng suffered a devastating fire that destroyed many traditional buildings in the village. Since then, local residents have made great efforts to rebuild and restore much of the old architecture, hoping to protect the village’s historical appearance.
Today, Gaozeng continues to balance modernization with heritage preservation, maintaining its identity as an ancient Dong settlement.
