In the morning, your private guide will pick you up from your hotel in Chengdu and drive approximately three hours to Anyue, enjoying the changing scenery of the Sichuan Plain along the way.
Anyue is renowned for its remarkable collection of ancient Buddhist rock carvings and grottoes, many of which are hidden among traditional villages and peaceful rural landscapes. These lesser-known cultural treasures offer a fascinating glimpse into the development of Buddhist art in Sichuan.
In the afternoon, explore two of Anyue’s most famous sites, Mingshan Temple and Pilu Cave. Located amid traditional rural surroundings, these historic sites are home to exquisitely carved Buddhist statues and sculptures dating back centuries.
Pilu Cave is particularly famous for its magnificent Purple Bamboo Guanyin, an exceptionally elegant Buddhist sculpture that has earned the nickname “Venus of the East.” The area also has connections with the internationally popular video game Black Myth: Wukong, which draws inspiration from traditional Chinese mythology, Buddhist art, architecture, and landscapes.
If time permits, take a short visit to a nearby local village and experience the rural scenery of Anyue. The area is well known for its lemon cultivation, with lemon orchards covering much of the surrounding countryside.
In the late afternoon, continue to Anyue city for your overnight stay.
D2 Anyue / Chengdu
Distance: approximately 150 km | Driving: about 2 hours
In the morning, continue exploring the remarkable rock carvings located closer to the western side of Anyue city. Yuanjue Cave, Qianfo Village, and Wofo Temple are only a few kilometers from the city center and feature some of the area’s largest and most impressive collections of Buddhist sculptures.
Walk among the ancient grottoes and admire the extraordinary craftsmanship of the statues and rock carvings. You will encounter a wide variety of Buddhist figures, from enormous sculptures to finely detailed carvings, each reflecting the artistic traditions and religious culture of ancient Sichuan.
After the visit, drive back to Chengdu, approximately two hours away. Arrive in Chengdu in the late afternoon, where your 2-day Anyue Buddhist art and rock carving tour comes to an end.
