13-Day Sichuan Tibetan Plateau Trekking & Adventure Tour
Experience the spectacular landscapes of western Sichuan on this 13-day trekking adventure from Chengdu. The journey takes you from the Chengdu Plain into the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, combining mountain trekking, snow-capped peaks, Tibetan villages, monasteries, alpine lakes, and some of Sichuan’s most scenic landscapes.
From the valleys of Wolong and Mount Siguniang to the Tibetan villages of Danba and Jiaju, the Buddhist center of Seda, the dramatic landscapes of Daocheng Yading, the photography paradise of Xinduqiao, and the spectacular sea of clouds at Mount Niubei, this itinerary is designed for travelers seeking an active and immersive experience in western Sichuan.
Due to the high elevations involved, this tour requires good physical fitness and appropriate preparation for altitude.
Day 1: Arrival in Chengdu
Arrive in Chengdu and check in to your hotel independently. If time permits, you can explore some of Chengdu’s attractions or enjoy the city’s famous teahouses and local cuisine.
In the evening, meet your guide in the hotel lobby at 8:00 PM for a tour briefing and preparation for the journey ahead.
Chengdu is located at an elevation of approximately 500 meters, providing a relatively low-altitude starting point before gradually ascending into the Tibetan Plateau.

Day 2: Chengdu / Wolong / Rilong
204 km | Approximately 5 hours’ driving
Begin your western Sichuan adventure today. Drive for approximately three hours to Wolong, home to one of China’s most important giant panda conservation areas.
Continue through the spectacular mountain scenery of western Sichuan and cross the Balang Mountain Tunnel before arriving in Rilong, the gateway to Mount Siguniang.
The elevation rises considerably today, so the afternoon is intentionally kept relaxed to allow your body to begin acclimatizing.
Spend the night in Rilong at approximately 3,100 meters above sea level.

Day 3: Rilong / Haizigou Valley Trekking
Trekking: Approximately 8 hours
Today begins your trekking adventure in Mount Siguniang National Scenic Area, also known as the Four Girls Mountain.
The area is famous for its dramatic snow-covered peaks, alpine valleys, forests, meadows, and mountain lakes. Begin your trek in Haizigou Valley, following mountain trails toward the high-altitude lake.
The ascent takes approximately four hours. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped mountains and the surrounding alpine landscape.
After reaching the lake area, retrace your route and descend toward Rilong in the afternoon.
This is one of the most physically demanding trekking days of the itinerary.

Day 4: Rilong / Changping Valley / Shuangqiao Valley / Danba
112 km | Approximately 3 hours’ driving | Trekking: approximately 3 hours
Today, explore another spectacular valley of Mount Siguniang: Changping Valley.
The valley provides magnificent views of the Four Girls Mountain peaks and features alpine forests, rivers, meadows, and mountain scenery.
Continue to Shuangqiao Valley, another scenic area renowned for its pristine forests, snow-capped peaks, streams, and dramatic rock formations.
In the afternoon, drive toward Danba, known as the “Valley of Beauty” and famous for its distinctive Tibetan villages and stone watchtowers.
Continue directly to Jiaju Tibetan Village, one of the most picturesque Tibetan settlements in Sichuan. Traditional Tibetan houses and stone towers are scattered across the green mountainsides, creating an extraordinary landscape.
Tonight, experience local Tibetan hospitality with a traditional meal in a Tibetan home and stay in a local Tibetan guesthouse.
Danba is located at approximately 1,935 meters above sea level, significantly lower than Rilong.

Day 5: Danba / Seda
395 km | Approximately 8 hours’ driving
Rise early to explore Jiaju Tibetan Village before departure. From the surrounding viewpoints, enjoy panoramic views of the traditional Tibetan houses, farmland, mountains, and ancient
stone towers.
Then begin a full-day drive toward Seda, passing through Luhuo and Daofu.
Along the way, visit Huiyuan Monastery in Bamei, a historic Tibetan Buddhist monastery associated with the 7th Dalai Lama and the 11th Dalai Lama.
Continue toward Seda and arrive in the late afternoon.
In the evening, visit Larung Gar Buddhist Academy to enjoy its spectacular evening scenery. Thousands of small houses spread across the surrounding mountains, creating a remarkable landscape as the lights come on after sunset.
Seda stands at approximately 3,890 meters above sea level.

Day 6: Seda / Larung Gar / Ganzi
253 km | Approximately 6 hours’ driving
Return to Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in the morning for further exploration.
This enormous Tibetan Buddhist center is one of the most remarkable cultural landscapes in western Sichuan. Observe the dense collection of monastic dwellings spread across the surrounding valleys and learn more about Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
Continue your visit by hiking up toward the viewpoint and Mandala area.
In the afternoon, drive approximately four hours toward Ganzi County, enjoying the high-altitude landscapes and Tibetan Plateau scenery along the way.
Ganzi is located at approximately 3,394 meters above sea level.

Day 7: Ganzi / Xinlong / Litang / Daocheng
417 km | Approximately 9 hours’ driving
Today, travel deeper into the Tibetan Plateau toward Daocheng.
Drive through Xinlong and Litang while enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Yalong River, deep mountain gorges, grasslands, and high-altitude valleys.
Visit Litang Monastery, an important Tibetan Buddhist monastery associated with the Gelug tradition.
Continue through the high mountain landscapes toward Daocheng. Along the route, you may see alpine lakes and vast Tibetan grasslands.
The journey crosses a mountain pass at approximately 4,700 meters above sea level, making today another important acclimatization day.
Arrive in Daocheng in the late afternoon.
Daocheng is located at approximately 3,740 meters above sea level.

Day 8: Daocheng / Yading Nature Reserve Trekking
Approximately 110 km | 2 hours’ driving | Trekking: approximately 7 hours
Drive toward Yading Nature Reserve, one of the most spectacular mountain destinations in western Sichuan.
Travel to Shangri-La Town and then take the local sightseeing bus into the Yading scenic area.
Continue by electric sightseeing vehicle to Luorong Yak Meadow, where you can enjoy magnificent views of Yading’s three sacred snow-capped mountains.
From here, begin your trek toward Milk Lake, located approximately 5.3 km away.
The trail passes through alpine meadows, mountain valleys, and spectacular high-altitude scenery. Depending on your preference and local conditions, horses may be available for part of the route.
After completing the trek, return toward Shangri-La Town for the night.

Day 9: Yading / Litang / Xinduqiao
427 km | Approximately 8.5 hours’ driving
Leave Yading today and travel toward Xinduqiao, one of the most famous photography destinations in western Sichuan.
The journey passes through high-altitude grasslands, mountain valleys, Tibetan villages, rivers, and traditional wooden bridges.
Xinduqiao is often called a “photographer’s paradise” because of its beautiful combination of Tibetan villages, snow-capped mountains, rivers, meadows, and traditional houses.
Enjoy the changing scenery along the route and arrive in Xinduqiao in the late afternoon.

Day 10: Xinduqiao / Kangding / Lengji Village / Pumaidi
150 km | Approximately 3.5 hours’ driving | Trekking: approximately 5 hours
Leave Xinduqiao and travel toward Kangding, crossing the spectacular Zheduo Mountain Pass at approximately 4,200 meters above sea level.
Continue to Kangding, a historic mountain city surrounded by mountains and the Zheduo River.
After a short visit, continue driving toward Lengji Village.
From here, begin your trek through the mountain landscape. Follow the trail through valleys and traditional villages while enjoying the surrounding mountains and natural scenery.
After approximately five hours of trekking, arrive at Pumaidi, where you will spend the night at a local camp.
The camping area is located at approximately 2,700 meters above sea level.

Day 11: Mount Niubei Trekking
Trekking: approximately 4 hours
Continue your trek toward the summit of Mount Niubei.
After approximately four hours of hiking, reach the summit area at around 3,660 meters above sea level.
Mount Niubei is famous among outdoor enthusiasts and photographers for its spectacular sea of clouds, sunrise, sunset, and panoramic mountain views.
Weather conditions can change quickly at high altitude, but if conditions are favorable, the views from the mountain are extraordinary.
Spend the night at a local guesthouse or in a villager’s house near the mountain.

Day 12: Mount Niubei / Luding
Trekking: approximately 8 hours | Driving: approximately 40 km / 1 hour
If weather conditions are favorable, wake early to watch the sunrise from Mount Niubei.
After breakfast, begin the long descent from the mountain. Follow the mountain trails through the changing landscape before meeting your vehicle.
In the afternoon, drive approximately one hour to Luding.
The elevation drops significantly to approximately 1,350 meters, providing a welcome break after several days at high altitude.
Spend the night in Luding.

Day 13: Luding / Shimian / Ya’an / Chengdu
Approximately 280 km | 5 hours’ driving
Begin the final journey back toward Chengdu.
Depending on road conditions, the route may pass through Erliang Mountain or Shimian before continuing toward Ya’an and Chengdu.
Enjoy the changing scenery as the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau gradually gives way to the lower mountain valleys and Sichuan Basin.
Arrive in Chengdu in the afternoon.
