Epic 90-Day Self-Drive Overland Tour Across China of Tony
Tony Xu from Hong Kong is an enthusiastic 4WD traveler with a deep passion for overland expeditions. For many years, he had dreamed of driving across mainland China and exploring its vast landscapes, rich history, and diverse cultures. However, there was one major challenge: Hong Kong-registered vehicles cannot legally operate on mainland roads without special permits, and drivers must obtain temporary Chinese driving licenses and license plates.
After searching extensively and receiving recommendations from friends in Europe, Tony discovered that China Exploration was a true expert in organizing self-drive and overland tours throughout China.

His first trip took place in May 2024 and lasted about two weeks. Starting from Shenzhen, he traveled through Guilin, Guizhou, and Chongqing before reaching the spectacular landscapes of Zhangjiajie. Starting from Shenzhen, they traveled through Chaozhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Xiapu, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Yangzhou, Mount Tai, Jinan, Qingdao, Weihai, Beijing, Chengde, Dalian, Yanbian, the North Korean border region, Harbin, Changbai Mountain, Inner Mongolia, Datong, Mount Wutai, Xi'an, Lanzhou, Xining, Qinghai Lake, Dunhuang, Hami, Urumqi, Burqin, Hemu, Jiadengyu, Korla, Kuqa, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, Shache, Yecheng, Ali, Mount Kailash, Everest Base Camp, Shigatse, Gyantse, Lhasa, Tsedang, Nyingchi, Markam, Batang, Daocheng, Kangding, Danba, Mount Siguniang, Jiuzhaigou, Guangyuan, Jiange, Chengdu, Mount Emei, Zigong, Bijie, Guiyang, Kaili, Mount Fanjing, Sanjiang, Guilin, Yangshuo, Guangzhou, and finally returned to Hong Kong through Shenzhen.
For three unforgettable months, they rose early every morning and drove hundreds of miles each day. Whenever a city or destination captured their interest, they stayed for a day or two to explore its treasures. Otherwise, they continued onward, always pursuing the next horizon.
