The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Tour
Located about 25 kilometers north of Lijiang, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is one of the most spectacular natural wonders in Yunnan Province. Also known as Yulong Snow Mountain, it is the southernmost snow-capped mountain in China and features the closest ocean glacier to the equator in Eurasia.
As one of the top attractions in Lijiang, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain consists of 13 majestic peaks stretching 35 kilometers from north to south and 15 kilometers from east to west. The highest peak, Shanzidou, rises to an elevation of 5,596 meters above sea level and remains unclimbed. Viewed from Lijiang Old Town, the snow-covered peaks resemble a giant jade dragon soaring through the clouds, giving the mountain its name. It is also known as the “White and Black Mountain” because of its unique geological composition of white limestone and black rock.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is often called a “Natural Glacier Museum” because it preserves various types of glaciers within its high-altitude environment. The mountain’s 13 peaks above 4,000 meters are covered with snow throughout the year, creating a breathtaking landscape of glaciers, snowfields, forests, and alpine meadows. Meltwater from the glaciers flows through valleys and forests, forming crystal-clear rivers and lakes that add to the mountain’s beauty.
The mountain is also a paradise for biodiversity. Thanks to its diverse climate zones and complex terrain, the area is home to nearly one-quarter of China’s plant species. More than 20 types of primeval forest communities, around 410 species of trees, and numerous rare animals thrive here. Different elevations create distinct ecosystems, allowing visitors to experience dramatic changes in scenery from dense forests to snowy peaks.
Among the most popular scenic spots are Yunshanping and Ganhaizi Meadow. Yunshanping is a beautiful alpine meadow surrounded by ancient spruce forests, offering stunning views of the snow-covered peaks. Ganhaizi, once a highland lake, has transformed into a vast grassland where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Beyond its natural beauty, the mountain is deeply connected with the culture and traditions of the Naxi ethnic group. Local legends, ancient beliefs, and the mysterious Shanzidou Peak add a unique cultural charm to this magnificent destination.
