Legend of Kuangsu and the Origin of Lushan’s Name

According to local stories, during the Zhou Dynasty period, a man named Kuangsu (also known as Kuangyu in some historical records) came to Lushan to practice spiritual cultivation. It was said that he lived as a hermit in the mountains and devoted himself to seeking wisdom and enlightenment.
The imperial court later heard of his reputation and repeatedly invited him to serve as an official. However, Kuangsu refused these invitations and continued living in seclusion among the mountains. Eventually, he disappeared, and local legends claimed that he had become an immortal.
Although the story is regarded as a legendary tale rather than historical fact, it became an important part of Lushan’s cultural heritage. Later generations built upon this legend and associated the mountain’s name with Kuangsu, calling it “Kuang Mountain.” Over time, the name evolved into Lushan.
