Lingering Garden
Lingering Garden is one of the most celebrated attractions in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, and one of China’s Four Great Classical Gardens. As part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the garden is renowned for its masterful landscape design, elegant architecture, and harmonious blend of nature and art.
Covering approximately 23,300 square meters, Lingering Garden is famous for its beautifully composed courtyards, ornamental rockeries, tranquil ponds, ancient trees, and graceful pavilions. Its ingenious layout creates an ever-changing sequence of landscapes, making it one of the finest examples of traditional Chinese garden design.

A Masterpiece of Ming Dynasty Garden Art
Originally built in 1593 during the Ming Dynasty, Lingering Garden was created as a private scholar’s garden by the official Xu Taishi. During the Qing Dynasty, it was restored and expanded by Liu Shu, whose family name (“Liu”) inspired the garden’s present name.
Unlike imperial gardens, Lingering Garden was designed to provide a peaceful retreat for scholars, emphasizing harmony between architecture, water, plants, and stone. Every courtyard and pathway reflects the refined artistic ideals of Jiangnan culture.

Highlights of Lingering Garden
Magnificent Rockeries
Lingering Garden is especially famous for its impressive Taihu stone rockeries, which are carefully arranged to resemble natural mountain landscapes. These artistic stone formations are considered masterpieces of classical Chinese garden design.

Central Pond
The tranquil Central Pond forms the heart of the garden. Elegant pavilions, covered corridors, and ornamental bridges surround the water, creating picturesque reflections and ever-changing seasonal scenery.

Covered Corridors
One of the garden’s defining features is its network of covered corridors, which connect different sections while framing carefully composed views. Every turn reveals a new landscape, demonstrating the sophisticated spatial design for which Lingering Garden is renowned.

Classical Architecture
The garden contains beautifully preserved halls, pavilions, studies, and reception rooms decorated with traditional wood carvings, lattice windows, calligraphy, and ornamental furnishings that reflect the elegant lifestyle of ancient Chinese scholars.

Things to Do at Lingering Garden
Visitors to Lingering Garden can enjoy a variety of cultural experiences, including:
* Explore one of China’s Four Great Classical Gardens
* Admire exquisite Taihu stone rockeries
* Walk through elegant covered corridors
* Photograph traditional pavilions and peaceful ponds
* Appreciate seasonal flowers and ancient trees
* Learn about classical Chinese garden design
* Experience the tranquil atmosphere of a historic scholar’s garden
Every season offers its own unique charm, from colorful blossoms in spring and lotus flowers in summer to brilliant autumn foliage and serene winter landscapes.

Why Visit Lingering Garden?
As one of the most famous gardens in China, Lingering Garden represents the highest achievement of traditional Jiangnan landscape architecture. Its extraordinary use of space, refined artistic composition, and cultural significance have made it one of the world’s greatest examples of classical Chinese garden design.
Conveniently located in Suzhou’s historic center, the garden is often visited alongside the Humble Administrator’s Garden, Master of the Nets Garden, Tiger Hill, and Suzhou Museum, making it an essential stop on any Suzhou itinerary.
Whether you’re interested in Chinese architecture, landscape design, history, photography, or traditional culture, Lingering Garden offers an unforgettable journey into the timeless beauty of Suzhou’s classical gardens.
