Wuzhen Water Town
Wuzhen Water Town, meaning “town of black awning boats”, is a well-preserved ancient water town located in Tongxiang City, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, about 60 kilometers away from Hangzhou. It lies in the center of the Jiangnan water town region, renowned as “the last resting place of the ancient Jiangnan culture”.
The history of Wuzhen dates back more than 1,300 years, to the late Tang Dynasty. Originally a typical water town built along the Grand Canal, its layout was shaped by the river network, with streets, houses and markets built along the water. As the town developed, the original waterway network and stone bridges remained intact, forming the unique pattern of “bridges connecting houses, houses facing the water”.
Wuzhen is divided into two main scenic areas: the East Scenic Zone and the West Scenic Zone. The East Zone features well-preserved traditional dwellings, ancient workshops and folk museums, showcasing daily life in the old Jiangnan towns. The West Zone, with its restored waterside streets and lantern-lit night views, has become famous for its tranquil atmosphere and cultural events like the Wuzhen Theatre Festival. There are more than 70 stone bridges of different styles in the town, such as the iconic Shuangqiao (Double Bridge), creating a poetic water town landscape.
In 1991, Wuzhen was listed as one of the first batch of Historical and Cultural Towns in Zhejiang Province. In 1999, large-scale restoration and tourism development began, focusing on preserving the original style while improving visitor facilities. In 2010, Wuzhen Scenic Area was officially awarded the national AAAAA level tourist attraction rating by the National Tourism Administration.
After years of development, Wuzhen has formed a comprehensive tourist destination with cultural performances, traditional craft workshops, water town cruises, and night tours. It has become a symbol of Jiangnan water town culture, attracting visitors from all over the world to experience the slow-paced life and authentic charm of ancient China.
