Lu Xun’s Hometown Scenic Area
Lu Xun’s Hometown, located in the heart of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, is one of China’s most famous cultural and literary attractions. Situated about 60 kilometers from Hangzhou, this well-preserved historic district is the birthplace and childhood home of Lu Xun (Zhou Shuren), widely regarded as the father of modern Chinese literature.
Recognized as a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction, Lu Xun’s Hometown Scenic Area combines traditional Jiangnan architecture, historic residences, museums, and old streets, allowing visitors to experience both the life of China’s greatest modern writer and the rich cultural heritage of Shaoxing.Lu Xun's hometown in Zhejiang Province

The Birthplace of Lu Xun
Born in 1881 as Zhou Shuren, Lu Xun spent his childhood and youth in this neighborhood. The people, customs, architecture, and daily life of old Shaoxing later became the inspiration for many of his literary masterpieces, including Diary of a Madman, The True Story of Ah Q, and Kong Yiji.
Today, the scenic area carefully preserves the original layout of his former residence, ancestral home, and surrounding streets, providing an authentic glimpse into life in Shaoxing during the late Qing Dynasty.

Top Attractions at Lu Xun’s Hometown
Lu Xun’s Former Residence
The highlight of the scenic area is Lu Xun’s Former Residence, the traditional courtyard house where he was born and spent his early years. Original furnishings, family belongings, and everyday household items have been carefully preserved, offering visitors an intimate look at his childhood environment.

Baicao Garden
Baicao Garden is the famous backyard described in Lu Xun’s essays. Once his favorite childhood playground, the peaceful garden remains one of the most popular attractions in the scenic area and offers visitors the chance to experience the setting that inspired some of his best-known writings.

Sanwei Study (Sanwei Shuwu)
Sanwei Study is the traditional private school where Lu Xun received his early education. Visitors can still see the legendary “早” (Early) character carved into his desk, a symbol of his determination and diligence that has inspired generations of students.

Lu Xun Memorial Hall
The Lu Xun Memorial Hall presents a comprehensive introduction to the writer’s life and achievements. Exhibits include original manuscripts, first editions of his works, photographs, personal belongings, and valuable historical documents, making it an essential stop for anyone interested in modern Chinese literature.

Ancient Streets
The surrounding stone-paved streets preserve the charm of old Shaoxing. Traditional shops, teahouses, bookstores, and local snack stalls recreate the atmosphere described in many of Lu Xun’s stories, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural landscape that shaped his writing.

Things to Do at Lu Xun’s Hometown
Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of cultural experiences, including:
* Explore Lu Xun’s Former Residence and Memorial Hall
* Visit Baicao Garden and Sanwei Study
