Altun Mountain Nature Reserve
Altun Mountains landscape and wildlife habitat in XinjiangEstablished in 1983, Altun Mountain Nature Reserve is located in the southern part of Ruoqiang County in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It borders Qinghai Province to the east and the Tibet Autonomous Region to the south.
Covering an immense area of high-altitude wilderness, the reserve is one of China’s most important protected areas for wildlife and fragile alpine ecosystems. Its remote location and limited human activity have allowed a remarkably complete natural ecosystem to survive.

A Remote Highland Wilderness
Altun Mountain Nature Reserve lies within a vast highland basin surrounded by mountains. Much of the reserve is situated at elevations of around 4,500 meters, creating an extremely rugged and challenging environment.
The combination of high altitude, cold temperatures, extensive grasslands and isolated mountain valleys has created an ecosystem unlike many other regions of China.
Because of its remoteness and relatively undisturbed environment, the reserve has significant scientific value for studying high-altitude ecosystems, wildlife and the effects of environmental change on the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountain regions.

A Paradise for Rare Wildlife
One of the greatest treasures of Altun Mountain Nature Reserve is its extraordinary wildlife.
The protected area provides habitat for many rare and endangered animals, including:
* Wild yak
* Tibetan wild ass
* Chiru, or Tibetan antelope
* Argali
* Bharal, or blue sheep
* Snow leopard
* Lynx
* Brown bear
* Golden eagle
* Tibetan snowcock
* Wild goose
The combination of abundant wildlife and relatively low levels of human disturbance makes Altun one of the most important wilderness areas in western China.
Large mammals such as wild yaks and Tibetan wild asses are particularly well adapted to the harsh high-altitude environment. Snow leopards and other predators occupy the upper levels of this natural food chain, contributing to the ecological balance of the reserve.

Wild yak in Altun Mountain Nature ReserveAn Intact Alpine Ecosystem
The reserve is characterized by a largely natural ecosystem in which grasslands, wetlands, lakes and mountain habitats support a diverse range of wildlife.
The high elevation creates a harsh climate, but species living here have developed remarkable adaptations to cold, thin air and limited vegetation.
The reserve’s extensive and relatively undisturbed landscape provides an important refuge for species that require large territories and low levels of human disturbance.
For scientists and conservationists, Altun Mountain Nature Reserve is therefore an important natural laboratory for understanding biodiversity in high-altitude environments.

The “Guilin of the Plateau”
The southern part of the reserve contains an unusual landscape shaped by water erosion. Numerous caves, valleys and rock formations have been carved into the highland terrain.
The dramatic combination of rugged mountains and unusual eroded landforms has led the area to be described as the “Guilin of the Plateau.”
Unlike the lush karst scenery of Guilin in southern China, however, Altun’s landscape is characterized by high-altitude mountains, open wilderness and a much harsher environment.
The contrast makes this part of the reserve particularly fascinating for travelers interested in geology and remote landscapes.

Mysterious Whale Lake
One of the most unusual natural features in the reserve is Whale Lake, a body of water whose outline resembles the shape of a whale.
The lake is especially interesting because of the reported difference in water conditions between its sections. The front part of the lake is described as saline, while the rear section contains freshwater.
This unusual natural phenomenon adds to the mystery and fascination of the lake and makes it one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Altun Mountains.
Surrounded by vast highland wilderness, Whale Lake demonstrates the remarkable variety of geological and hydrological environments found within the reserve.

Exploring the Altun Mountains
Altun Mountain Nature Reserve is one of China’s most remote and pristine wilderness areas. Its enormous scale, extreme altitude, rare wildlife and unusual geological landscapes make it particularly important for conservation and scientific research.
For travelers interested in wildlife, geology, high-altitude landscapes and remote destinations, the Altun Mountains offer a rare glimpse into one of the least disturbed natural environments in China.
The combination of wild yaks roaming across open grasslands, snow leopards inhabiting rugged mountains, unusual rock formations and mysterious highland lakes makes Altun Mountain Nature Reserve a truly extraordinary destination in southern Xinjiang.
