Established in 1983, the Altun Mountain Nature Reserve lies in the south part of Ruoqiang County, adjacent to Qinghai Province in the east and Tibet Autonomous Region in the south, covering an area of 4.5 square meters, which is the biggest comprehensive reserve nowadays in the country.

The nature reserve is situated in a closed basin surrounded by high mountains at an altitude of 4500 meters. The species and high density of wild animals can not be seen in other part of the country, including wild yak, Tibet wild ass, antelope, argal, bharal, snow leopard, lynx, brown bear, golden eagle, snow cock, wild goose. With a complete and primitive ecosystem, it has a high scientific research value.

In the southern part of Altun Mountain Nature Reserve, there is mountainous region with land area of 10 thousand square meters, where exist a great number of water-eroded cave, which can be called “Guilin in plateau”.

In the southern part, there is a lake called “Whale Lake” in a shape of whale. The strangest thing is water in the front part of the lake is salt water, and rear part is fresh water.
