Day 1: Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum – Linggu Temple – Ming Dynasty City Wall – Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum – Confucius Temple (L, Lunch)
In the morning, your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and begin your Nanjing sightseeing tour with a visit to the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, located on the southern slope of Purple Mountain (Zijin Mountain). The mausoleum commemorates Sun Yat-sen, an important figure in China’s modern history. Construction began in 1926 and the mausoleum was completed in 1929. Follow the long staircase toward the memorial hall and admire the impressive architectural design and peaceful mountain surroundings.
Next, visit Linggu Temple, a historic Buddhist temple nestled among the forests of Purple Mountain. Originally established more than 1,500 years ago, the temple has been rebuilt and relocated several times throughout its history. Explore the tranquil temple grounds and learn about its connection with Nanjing’s long Buddhist tradition.
Continue to the Ming Dynasty City Wall, one of the most impressive surviving sections of the ancient city defenses of Nanjing. Built during the Ming Dynasty under the Hongwu Emperor, the wall once formed part of a vast defensive system surrounding the imperial capital. Walk along a section of the historic wall and enjoy views of the surrounding city.
After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, the tomb of the Hongwu Emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of the Ming Dynasty. The mausoleum is part of the Ming and Qing Imperial Tombs UNESCO World Heritage Site and is particularly famous for its Sacred Way, where impressive stone animals and guardian figures line the approach to the tomb. The combination of historic architecture, stone sculptures, and wooded hills makes this one of Nanjing’s most memorable historical sites.
In the late afternoon, head to the Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao) area, one of the most popular places for evening sightseeing in Nanjing. Wander through the lively historic streets, explore traditional buildings and local shops, and sample some authentic Nanjing snacks.
As evening falls, enjoy the illuminated scenery along the Qinhuai River, where traditional architecture and riverside pavilions create a charming atmosphere. If you wish, you may also take an optional boat cruise along the Qinhuai River for a different perspective of historic Nanjing at night.
After exploring the Confucius Temple area, your guide and driver will transfer you back to your hotel. Your Nanjing day tour ends here.
