History
China is one of the world’s four ancient civilizations, with a recorded history spanning more than 5,000 years. From the establishment of the Xia Dynasty, traditionally dated to around the 21st century BC, through the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties and into the late Spring and Autumn Period, ancient Chinese society gradually developed a slave-based system.
From the Warring States Period (475–221 BC) through the early Qing Dynasty, China experienced a long period of imperial and feudal rule. During these centuries, the country was successively governed by the Qin, Western Han, Eastern Han, Three Kingdoms, Western Jin, Eastern Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Song, Liao, Jin, Yuan, and Ming dynasties.
Following the First Opium War in 1840, China was gradually drawn into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal system as a result of foreign imperialist intervention and unequal treaties. In 1911, the Revolution of 1911, led by Sun Yat-sen and his revolutionary movement, overthrew the Qing Dynasty and brought more than 2,000 years of imperial rule to an end.
On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was formally proclaimed in Beijing, with Mao Zedong announcing its establishment.
Economy
China has developed a comprehensive industrial system encompassing a wide range of sectors and products. Agriculture has traditionally played an important role in the national economy, and China has long been one of the world's major producers of grain, cotton, sugar, oilseeds, tea, and other agricultural products.
Chinese handicrafts are also renowned worldwide for their exquisite craftsmanship, distinctive artistic traditions, and high level of skill. Over the decades, China has developed an extensive transportation network, with railways, highways, waterways, and civil aviation forming the major components of the country's transport infrastructure.
