Yubeng village in Meili Snow Mount
Yubeng Village beneath Meili Snow Mountain YunnanLocated in Yunling Township of Deqin County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, Yubeng Village (also called Yumbeng,雨崩村)is one of the most beautiful and remote villages in southwest China. Hidden deep in the valleys at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain, Yubeng is often described as a “miniature Shangri-La” thanks to its breathtaking natural scenery, peaceful Tibetan culture, and untouched atmosphere.
Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, forests, waterfalls, and alpine landscapes, Yubeng remains one of the most fascinating destinations for hikers and nature lovers. Due to its isolated location, there is still no highway directly connecting to the village. Visitors need to reach Yubeng by hiking or riding a horse, making the journey itself an unforgettable adventure.

A Remote Village Beneath Meili Snow Mountain
Yubeng Village lies beneath Wuzi Peak and Niancimu Peak of Meili Snow Mountain, one of the most sacred mountain ranges in Tibetan Buddhism. Located at a high altitude, the village enjoys a cool climate throughout the year, but its spectacular scenery and warm hospitality make it a rewarding destination for adventurous travelers.
The traditional Tibetan houses, simple lifestyle, and peaceful environment allow visitors to experience an authentic side of Tibetan culture far away from modern cities.
Tibetan village view of Yubeng Shangri-LaBecause of its unique location and pristine environment, Yubeng has become one of the most popular trekking destinations in Yunnan and is often considered one of the last hidden paradises in China.

Hiking to Yubeng Village
For most travelers, hiking is the best way to reach Yubeng and experience its natural beauty.
The classic trekking route starts from Xidang Village to Upper Yubeng Village. The total distance is about 18 kilometers, crossing the Nanzong Yakou Pass at an altitude of approximately 3,700 meters.
The hike usually takes around 4–6 hours, depending on physical condition and pace:
* About 12 km uphill
* About 6 km downhill
Along the trail, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of snow mountains, forests, valleys, and Tibetan villages. There are several rest stops along the route where hikers can buy water, drinks, and simple food such as instant noodles.
For easier navigation, travelers can check the numbers painted on nearby utility poles, which indicate their progress along the trail.

Sacred Meili Snow Mountain and Tibetan Beliefs
For local Tibetan people, Meili Snow Mountain is a sacred pilgrimage site and the home of protective mountain deities. Many Tibetans believe that climbing the sacred peaks would disturb the spirits and bring misfortune.
Because of these beliefs, Meili Snow Mountain has never been successfully climbed. Several mountaineering expeditions have attempted to reach the summit, but all failed. The most tragic attempt was made by a joint Chinese-Japanese expedition in 1991, when members lost their lives in an avalanche.
Today, Meili Snow Mountain remains one of the most mysterious and respected mountains in the Himalaya region.

Things to Do in Yubeng
Although Yubeng is a small village, it offers some of the most spectacular trekking experiences in Yunnan.
Popular hiking routes include:
