Yamdrok lake
Yamdrok Yumtso Lake turquoise waters in TibetLocated in the Shannan region of southern Tibet, south of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, Yamdrok Yumtso Lake (also known as Yamdrok Lake) is one of the three most sacred lakes in Tibet. Famous for its stunning turquoise waters, snow-covered mountain backdrop, and deep religious significance, it is among the most iconic natural landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau.
Often described as a “Turquoise Lake” or “Green Jade Lake,” Yamdrok Yumtso is not only a breathtaking natural wonder but also an important pilgrimage destination for Tibetan Buddhists.

Geography and Natural Features of Yamdrok Yumtso Lake
Yamdrok Yumtso is the largest freshwater lake on the southern slopes of the Himalayas. Located at an altitude of approximately 4,441 meters (14,570 feet) above sea level, the lake covers an area of about 638 square kilometers.
The lake stretches approximately:
* 130 kilometers in length
* 70 kilometers in width
* 20–40 meters in average depth
* Nearly 60 meters at its deepest point
Surrounded by high mountains and glaciers, Yamdrok Yumtso forms a spectacular high-altitude landscape where blue skies, snow peaks, and crystal-clear waters create an unforgettable scene.

The Beauty of the “Coral Lake”
The name Yamdrok Yumtso carries a special meaning in Tibetan culture. Due to its long, winding shape and numerous branches extending into the surrounding mountains, the lake resembles a beautiful coral formation, giving rise to the nickname “Coral Lake.”
It is also known as the “Green Jade Lake” because of its smooth, emerald-colored waters. Depending on the sunlight, weather, and viewing angle, the lake changes between shades of turquoise, deep blue, and green.
From the mountain viewpoints above the lake, Yamdrok Yumtso appears like a magnificent sapphire embedded among the Himalayan mountains.

Islands, Wildlife, and Alpine Scenery
Several small islands are scattered across the lake, covered with green grass and surrounded by peaceful waters. These islands provide a natural habitat for various species of birds, creating a vibrant ecosystem in this remote highland environment.
The scenery around Yamdrok Yumtso includes:
* Snow-covered Himalayan peaks
* Alpine grasslands
* Clear blue skies
* Highland wetlands
* Migratory birds and wildlife
The combination of sacred landscapes and untouched nature makes Yamdrok Yumtso one of Tibet’s most beautiful destinations.

Religious Significance of Yamdrok Yumtso
For Tibetan Buddhists, Yamdrok Yumtso is considered a sacred lake and is believed to be the manifestation of a female protector deity who safeguards Tibet.
Together with Lake Manasarovar and Namtso Lake, Yamdrok Yumtso is regarded as one of Tibet’s three holy lakes.
Many pilgrims travel long distances to visit the lake and pray for blessings. Some devoted believers complete the journey through traditional prostration pilgrimage, moving forward by bowing and praying along the road.
The spiritual atmosphere surrounding the lake adds a sense of mystery and reverence to its already spectacular natural beauty.

Visiting Yamdrok Yumtso Lake
Yamdrok Yumtso is one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Lhasa. The journey usually crosses the famous Gampala Pass, where visitors can enjoy one of the most impressive panoramic views of the lake.
The best viewpoints allow travelers to see the lake’s winding shape, turquoise waters, and surrounding snow mountains from above.
For visitors exploring Tibet, Yamdrok Yumtso offers a perfect combination of:
* Sacred Tibetan culture
* Himalayan scenery
* High-altitude adventure
* Natural beauty
It is a destination that represents both the spiritual heart and the extraordinary landscapes of Tibet.
