Tombs of Tibetan kings in Qonggyai
The Tombs of the Tibetan Kings (Tibetan Royal Tombs 藏王墓) are among the most important historical sites from the Tubo Kingdom (Tibetan Empire) and represent the largest group of ancient royal tombs in Tibet. Located in Qonggyai County (Qiongjie County), Shannan Prefecture, the site preserves the burial grounds of Tibetan kings, ministers, and royal family members from the 29th to the 40th generations of Tibetan Tsenpos (emperors).
Among the numerous tombs, the most famous and impressive is believed to be the tomb of King Songtsen Gampo, the founder of the powerful Tibetan Empire in the 7th century. The royal tombs provide valuable insights into the political system, cultural traditions, and burial customs of ancient Tibet more than 1,000 years ago.
The Tombs of the Tibetan Kings are located on Muchong Hill, facing the beautiful Yarlung River. The site reflects the traditional Tibetan concept of feng shui, with mountains behind and water in front. Standing on the vast plateau, the ancient burial mounds are surrounded by the western winds, golden sunset light, and the quiet flow of the Yarlung River, creating a solemn and mysterious atmosphere.
The royal tomb complex is an important symbol of the prosperity of the Tubo Kingdom. The scale and design of the burial site demonstrate the advanced craftsmanship, social organization, and cultural achievements of ancient Tibet. Archaeological research at the site has contributed greatly to understanding the rise and decline of the Tibetan Empire.
Today, the Tombs of the Tibetan Kings are listed as a national key cultural heritage site under special protection. Visitors can explore the ancient burial mounds, experience the historical atmosphere of the Yarlung Valley, and gain a deeper understanding of Tibet’s royal history and Buddhist cultural development.
