Tagong Monastery
Tagong Monastery (塔公寺) is one of the most famous Sakya monasteries in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. Located about 110 kilometers from Kangding, the monastery is the spiritual heart of the beautiful Tagong Scenic Area, a spectacular landscape combining vast grasslands, rivers, Tibetan villages, snow-capped mountains, and ancient Buddhist culture.
The name “Tagong” means “the place favored by Bodhisattvas” in Tibetan. For centuries, it has been deeply respected by the Kham Tibetan people and is often known as a “Mini Potala Palace” because of its important religious status and architectural charm.
Surrounded by the magnificent natural scenery of western Sichuan, Tagong Monastery sits beneath the sacred Mount Yala (Yala Snow Mountain). The snow-covered peak rises above the grassland like a giant guardian in silver armor, overlooking the monastery and surrounding valleys. At the foot of the mountain, traditional Tibetan villages, colorful prayer flags, grazing yaks, horses, and sheep create a peaceful pastoral scene that represents the unique beauty of the Tibetan Plateau.
According to local legend, Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty left a precious statue of Sakyamuni Buddha here when she traveled through the region more than 1,000 years ago. The statue, said to be the same size as the Buddha statue in Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, became the most sacred treasure of Tagong Monastery. The monastery also preserves the stone footprint of Phagpa Dharma Raja, an important figure in Tibetan Buddhist history, as another treasured relic.
The monastery is surrounded by a beautiful pagoda forest, adding to its sacred atmosphere. Visitors can experience traditional Tibetan Buddhist rituals, admire the unique monastery architecture, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Tagong Grassland and Mount Yala.
Every year in June, the famous Tagong Horse Racing Festival takes place on the grassland. This grand traditional event brings together local Tibetan communities with horse racing competitions, singing, dancing, and cultural celebrations, making it one of the most vibrant festivals in western Sichuan.
With its combination of sacred Buddhist heritage, stunning plateau landscapes, and authentic Tibetan culture, Tagong Monastery is one of the must-visit destinations along the Sichuan-Tibet cultural route.
