Samding Monastery
Samding Monastery is one of the most unique Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, located on the southwestern shore of Yamdrok Yumtso Lake (Yamdrok Lake) in Shannan Prefecture. Famous as the residence of the Samding Dorje Phagmo, Tibet’s first female reincarnated living Buddha, the monastery holds an important place in Tibetan Buddhist history and religious traditions.
The Samding Dorje Phagmo lineage is regarded as the manifestation of Vajravarahi (Dorje Phagmo), a female deity in Tibetan Buddhism. Vajravarahi is traditionally represented with a small sow’s head emerging from the right side of her human head, symbolizing wisdom and spiritual transformation. Since the establishment of the lineage, twelve incarnations of Samding Dorje Phagmo have lived at Samding Monastery, and the preserved remains of the previous eleven reincarnations are still kept within the monastery.
The origins of Samding Monastery remain associated with different historical accounts. Some records suggest that it was founded by a disciple of Khyungpo Naljor (978–1127), the founder of the Shangpa Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. Other historical sources state that the monastery was established in 1441 by the First Samding Dorje Phagmo, who was a disciple of Bodong Chokle Namgyel (1375–1451), founder of the Bodong School. Due to its historical connections, Samding Monastery is generally considered an important monastery of the Bodong tradition.
Originally a small temple, Samding Monastery gradually expanded into an impressive religious complex under the leadership of later Samding Dorje Phagmo reincarnations, especially during the periods of the Second and Fifth Samding Dorje Phagmo. The completed monastery consists mainly of the Red Palace and White Palace, whose architectural style resembles the famous Potala Palace in Lhasa.
