Ranwu Lake in Basu
Ranwu Lake (然乌湖) is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Tibet, located in Basu County, Chamdo Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. Known as the “Pearl of Eastern Tibet,” the lake is famous for its crystal-clear blue waters, snow-covered mountains, glaciers, forests, and grasslands. Its breathtaking scenery has often been compared to the Swiss Alps and the landscapes of Jiuzhaigou Valley.
Situated along the famous Sichuan-Tibet Highway (National Highway 318), Ranwu Lake is an essential stop for travelers crossing eastern Tibet. The lake lies at an altitude of about 3,800 meters above sea level and covers an area of approximately 22 square kilometers, making it the largest lake in southeastern Tibet.
The beauty of Ranwu Lake comes from the perfect harmony between glaciers, snow peaks, forests, and grasslands. The surrounding mountains include the magnificent Gangrigabu Snow Mountains, Azhagongla Glacier, and Bosula Peak. Melting snow and glaciers provide a continuous water source for the lake and nearby rivers, creating a spectacular landscape where white glaciers meet turquoise waters.
The scenery around Ranwu Lake changes with the seasons. In spring and summer, green meadows, wildflowers, and grazing livestock surround the lake, while snow-capped peaks reflect on the calm blue water. In autumn, the forests turn golden, creating a colorful contrast with the snowy mountains. During winter, the frozen lake and surrounding glaciers create a quiet and majestic highland landscape.
The lake area consists of several connected sections, with the water displaying different shades of blue and green depending on the sunlight, weather, and season. Small islands and rocky reefs appear across the water, adding to the lake’s natural charm. The nearby Amu Cuo Lake gradually narrows into a river valley, contributing to the diverse scenery of the region.
One of the most impressive features of Ranwu Lake is the dramatic contrast between the surrounding peaks and the peaceful lakeside scenery. Many mountains around the lake rise above 5,000 meters, with glaciers covering their upper slopes, while their lower areas are covered with pine forests, grasslands, and farmland. The sight of grazing yaks and sheep, traditional Tibetan villages, and highland barley fields creates a picturesque scene unique to eastern Tibet.
