Jyekundo Temple in Yushu
Located on Mutameimashan Mountain east of Jyekundo Town in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Jyekundo Temple (Jiegu si 结古寺) is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the northern Yushu region. Known in Tibetan as “Jiegudunzhuleng,” meaning “the auspicious place where all wishes are fulfilled,” the monastery belongs to the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism and has played a significant role in the religious and cultural history of the region.
Built against the mountainside, Jiegu Temple combines magnificent Tibetan architecture, profound Buddhist traditions, and a rich collection of cultural relics. With its long history and spiritual importance, it is considered one of the most representative Buddhist sites in Yushu.

History of Jyekundo Temple
According to historical records, the site was originally home to a temple of the Bon religion. By the end of the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368), the original temple had disappeared, and two smaller temples belonging to the Gagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism were later established here, including a Buddhist nunnery. A Red Hall was also built by the local Zhawu tribe.
In 1398, during the Ming Dynasty, the Sakya master Dangqinwa Jia’angxiraojianzan arrived in the area to spread Buddhist teachings. With the support of the Zhawu people, he established Jiegu Temple on the foundation of the former religious buildings. From then on, the monastery gradually developed into the main Sakya School temple in northern Yushu.
Throughout its history, Jyekundo Temple became famous for its grand architecture, large monastic community, rich Buddhist heritage, and the many respected scholars and religious figures who studied and taught there.

Architectural Features of Jiegu Temple
Built according to the natural terrain of Mutameimashan Mountain, Jiegu Temple follows the contours of the landscape. From a distance, its halls and meditation quarters appear like a series of magnificent multi-level Tibetan castles rising along the mountain slopes.
The main structure, the “Duwensangzhoujiacuo” Lecture Hall, was designed by renowned Tibetan Buddhist masters and supported by several important monasteries, including Dege Dzogchen Monastery. The hall can accommodate around 1,000 monks for Buddhist scripture chanting and religious ceremonies.
Other important buildings include the Scripture Lecture Hall, Jokhang Hall, Jiana Hall, and Living Buddha Wenbao Hall. Each structure features distinctive Tibetan architectural styles, colorful decorations, and elaborate religious artwork.

Religious and Cultural Importance
During its most prosperous period, Jyekundo Temple housed hundreds of monks and became an important center for Buddhist studies in Yushu. Many learned monks served as Khenpos (Tibetan Buddhist teachers) and contributed greatly to religious philosophy, medicine, history, and literature.
Among the notable figures associated with the monastery were Lama Nangga, who wrote several Buddhist works including explanations of important scriptures; Lama Jiangcai, a famous Tibetan doctor in Yushu; and Lama Rihuo, a scholar known for his historical writings on Tibetan culture and religious sites.
The monastery has preserved many valuable Buddhist treasures, including traditional Tibetan thangka paintings, statues of Tara made from sandalwood, ancient Indian vajras and bells, ritual objects associated with Tibetan culture, and historical artifacts connected with the local Zhawu tribe.

A Spiritual Destination in Yushu
Thanks to its religious significance and convenient location near Jyekundo Town, Jyekundo Temple has long attracted pilgrims, Buddhist masters, and visitors from across the Tibetan regions. The monastery remains an important place for experiencing Tibetan Buddhist traditions, local culture, and the spiritual atmosphere of the Yushu plateau.
Today, travelers visiting Yushu can explore Jyekundo Temple to admire its mountain setting, traditional Tibetan architecture, colorful religious art, and centuries-old Buddhist heritage. It offers a deeper understanding of the spiritual traditions that have shaped the cultural identity of Qinghai’s Tibetan communities.
