Giant Cypress in Nyingchi County
Located in Nyingchi, in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and Niyang River valleys, the Giant Cypress Nature Reserve is one of Tibet’s most remarkable natural attractions. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,000–3,400 meters, the reserve is home to hundreds of ancient Tibetan cypress trees, a species found only in Tibet.
Known for their enormous size, straight trunks, and magnificent crowns, these ancient cypresses create a unique forest landscape and hold deep spiritual significance for local Tibetan communities.
Ancient Cypress Forest of Bajie Village
The Giant Cypress Nature Reserve is located in Bajie Village. Unlike ordinary forests, the cypress trees here are famous for their impressive age and extraordinary dimensions.
The ancient cypresses in the reserve have an average height of around 44 meters, with an average trunk diameter of approximately 158 centimeters. Among them stands the famous Cypress King, the largest and most respected tree in the forest.
The Cypress King reaches about 56 meters in height, with a trunk diameter of nearly 6 meters. Its enormous crown spreads like a giant umbrella, covering an area of more than one acre. Having stood for over 2,000 years, the tree is regarded by local people as the “God of Tree” and has become a symbol of longevity, strength, and harmony between humans and nature.
A Sacred Forest in Tibetan Culture
For local Tibetans, the Giant Cypress Forest is not only a natural wonder but also a sacred place connected with ancient religious traditions.
According to local belief, these ancient cypress trees are associated with the life trees of Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche, the founder of the Bon tradition, an ancient spiritual tradition of Tibet that predates Buddhism.
Because of this religious connection, pilgrims from distant areas have traditionally traveled to the forest to pray, make offerings, and show respect for the ancient trees.
The peaceful atmosphere of the forest, combined with its spiritual importance, makes it a unique destination where visitors can experience the relationship between Tibetan culture, nature, and faith.
