Sera Monastery
Sera Monastery （色拉寺）is one of the three great monasteries of Lhasa, together with Drepung Monastery and Ganden Monastery. Located at the foot of Tatipu Hill in the northern suburbs of Lhasa, it is one of the most important centers of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) School of Tibetan Buddhism and a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Tibetan culture and spirituality.
Founded in 1419 during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) by Jamchen Chojey, one of the principal disciples of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa tradition, Sera Monastery has played an important role in Tibetan Buddhist education for centuries. The monastery was named “Sera,” meaning “wild rose” in Tibetan, because the hills surrounding the monastery were once covered with blooming wild roses when it was established.
Covering an area of about 114,946 square meters, Sera Monastery is a magnificent architectural complex featuring traditional Tibetan Buddhist design. The main structures include the Coqen Hall (Great Assembly Hall), Zhacang (Buddhist colleges), and Kamcun (monk dormitories). These buildings preserve numerous religious treasures, including scriptures written with gold powder, exquisite Buddhist statues, embroidered religious textiles, and beautifully preserved murals.
As one of Tibet’s most important monastic universities, Sera Monastery has long been a center for the study of Buddhist philosophy, scriptures, and religious debate. The monastery is especially famous for its daily Buddhist debates, where monks discuss Buddhist teachings through a unique style involving questions, answers, gestures, and philosophical reasoning. These lively debates are considered one of the most fascinating cultural experiences in Lhasa and are different from those held at other major Tibetan monasteries.
