Bangong Lake
Bangong Lake (班公湖), also known as Pangong Tso, is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. In Tibetan, it is called Tsomo Nganglha Ringpo, meaning the “long-necked swan lake.” Located about 12 kilometers west of Rutog County in western Tibet, Bangong Lake is a breathtaking high-altitude lake surrounded by the magnificent landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau.
The lake is approximately 135 kilometers from Shiquanhe Town, the administrative center of Ngari Prefecture. Situated at an elevation of about 4,240 meters above sea level, Bangong Lake stretches from east to west with a total area of around 604 square kilometers. The lake is about 150 kilometers long, with an average width of approximately 4 kilometers, while the narrowest section is only about 5 meters wide. The average water depth is around 5 meters, with the deepest point reaching 41 meters.
A Unique Lake with Freshwater and Saltwater Sections
One of the most remarkable features of Bangong Lake is its unusual east-west variation in water salinity. The eastern section within China is a freshwater lake, the central section is a brackish lake, while the western section is a saltwater lake. This rare geographical phenomenon makes Bangong Lake unique among lakes around the world.
The freshwater supply mainly comes from tributaries such as Maga Zangbo and Doraemon River, which flow into the eastern part of the lake. Due to the narrow shape of the lake and limited water exchange between the eastern and western sections, the salt concentration gradually increases from east to west, creating three different ecological environments within the same lake.
Bird Island – A Paradise for Migratory Birds
Bangong Lake is also famous for its rich wildlife, especially Bird Island, which provides an important breeding ground for many rare bird species. Every year from May to August, thousands of migratory birds gather here, creating a spectacular scene where snow-covered mountains, crystal-clear water, and countless birds form a beautiful natural painting.
