Shibaozhai Stone Fortress
Shibaozhai Fortress wooden pagoda beside Yangtze River
Shibaozhai Stone Fortress (Stone Treasure Fortress 石宝寨), located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in Zhong County, Chongqing, is one of the most unique cultural attractions along the Three Gorges cruise route. Situated about 278 kilometers (173 miles) from Chongqing’s urban area, this remarkable riverside structure is famous for its traditional wooden architecture, historical legends, and dramatic location on a steep cliff.
Originally built during the Qing Dynasty in 1750, Shibaozhai was constructed around a rectangular rock known as Shibao Mountain, which rises approximately 56 meters above the river. The fortress consists of a striking 12-story wooden pavilion attached to the side of the cliff, creating an impressive architectural scene that blends naturally with the surrounding landscape.
Following the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the water level of the Yangtze River changed significantly. Today, Shibaozhai stands beside the reservoir, with protective structures surrounding the site and preserving this important cultural landmark.

The Unique Wooden Architecture of Shibaozhai
The most impressive feature of Shibaozhai is its tall wooden pavilion built along the cliff face. Unlike traditional towers that stand independently, the structure of Shibaozhai follows the shape of the mountain and rises vertically from the riverside.
The 12 floors of the wooden building contain numerous cultural exhibits, including:
* Traditional paintings
* Wooden sculptures
* Historical artifacts
* Religious statues
* Stories of famous Chinese figures
Each level is dedicated to important historical personalities, including generals from the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD), local scholars, and famous Chinese poets.
Visitors can climb through the wooden corridors and stairways to reach the top. Although the climb takes time, travelers can enjoy the artwork and cultural displays on each floor along the way. The entire visit usually takes around 1.5 hours, including the walk from the pier to the fortress and the return journey.

At the summit of Shibao Mountain stands a small temple offering beautiful views of the Yangtze River, nearby villages, and surrounding farmland.
The temple contains several important statues worshipped by local residents. Among them is Guan Yu, a legendary general from the Three Kingdoms period who is widely respected in Chinese culture as a symbol of loyalty and courage.
Other statues represent traditional Chinese deities connected with protection, prosperity, and family blessings, reflecting the local people’s religious beliefs and daily hopes.

Legends of Shibaozhai
Shibaozhai is not only famous for its architecture but also for fascinating local legends.

The Duck Well Legend
One famous story tells of a mysterious well located at the top of the mountain. According to legend, if a duck was placed into the well, it would travel through an underground passage and eventually appear in the Yangtze River below.
Although this story is considered a folk legend, it adds a sense of mystery to the fortress and reflects the imagination of local traditions.

The Rice Flowing Well Legend
Another legend explains the origin of the name “Stone Treasure.” It is said that a small hole in the rock once produced enough rice every day to feed the monks and visitors staying at the temple.
However, a greedy monk wanted to obtain more rice and enlarged the hole. After this, the rice stopped flowing forever. The story is often told as a reminder against greed and excessive desire.

Scenic Views and Travel Experience
Besides its historical buildings, Shibaozhai offers spectacular views of the Yangtze River. From the upper levels of the fortress, visitors can overlook:
* The winding Yangtze River
* Green mountains surrounding the Three Gorges region
* Traditional villages and farmland along the riverbanks
The combination of natural scenery, ancient architecture, and local legends makes Shibaozhai one of the most memorable stops on a Yangtze River cruise.
For travelers interested in Chinese history, traditional architecture, and cultural heritage, Shibaozhai Fortress provides a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and stories of the Three Gorges region.
