Four Gates Pagoda
Located on Qinglong Mountain, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of Jinan, the Four Gates Pagoda (Simen Pagoda) is one of the most famous historical attractions in Jinan, Shandong Province. Built during the Sui Dynasty (581–618), it is regarded as one of the best-preserved ancient stone pagodas in China and an outstanding example of early Chinese Buddhist architecture.
A Historic Sui Dynasty Buddhist Pagoda
The Four Gates Pagoda was constructed during the Sui Dynasty and has survived for more than 1,400 years. With its simple yet elegant design, it represents the development of Chinese Buddhist architecture during the early medieval period.
The pagoda is a square stone structure measuring approximately 15 meters high. Each of its four sides features an arched doorway, giving the pagoda its name. Inside the pagoda, four Buddha statues face the four directions, representing the Buddhist belief in protection and spiritual guidance from all sides.
Unique Architectural Design
The Four Gates Pagoda is famous for its distinctive construction techniques.
The roof is supported by 16 triangular stone beams, which connect the outer walls with the central pillar. This ingenious design provides strong structural stability while creating a graceful architectural appearance.
Unlike many later Chinese pagodas with multiple floors and elaborate decorations, the Four Gates Pagoda features a compact and balanced style, reflecting the simplicity and solemnity of Sui Dynasty Buddhist architecture.
Ancient Buddhist Statues
Inside the pagoda are four stone Buddha statues carved on the walls, each facing a different direction. Among them, the Akshobhya Buddha statue on the east wall is especially notable.
In 1997, the head of this Buddha statue was illegally removed and stolen, causing damage to this valuable cultural relic. Conservation efforts have since been carried out to protect the remaining historical features of the pagoda.
