Wusute Water Yadan Geopark
Located in the northwestern part of the Qaidam Basin in Qinghai Province, Wusute Water Yadan Geopark is one of the most extraordinary geological landscapes in China. After thousands of years of geological evolution, erosion, and environmental changes, this region has developed the largest and most spectacular water Yadan landform community in the world.
Unlike traditional desert Yadan landscapes, where rock formations rise from dry land, Wusute Water Yadan combines desert, wetlands, and lakes, creating a rare natural scene where golden rock formations stand among blue waters.
The Water Yadan area covers approximately 21,000 square kilometers, with the main landscapes distributed in areas such as Nanbaxian, Southern Baxian, and Oboliang.
The Yadan formations generally range from 10 to 25 meters high, with some towering structures reaching up to 50 meters. These uniquely shaped mounds display a wide variety of forms and colors, creating a spectacular landscape unlike anywhere else in the world.

Formation of the Wusute Water Yadan Landscape
Wusute Water Yadan is located between Yiliping to the west and the Mahai area to the east, near the Duck Lake area between East Taijnar Lake and West Taijnar Lake, approximately 240 kilometers west of Dachaidan.
Originally, this region was a dry desert area with occasional flash floods. Over time, water from the Nalenggele River, which originates in the Kunlun Mountains, gradually flowed into the low-lying desert area.
The accumulation of river water transformed the landscape, creating a unique combination of:
* Desert Yadan formations
* Lakes and wetlands
* River channels
* Wildlife habitats
This rare geological process formed the spectacular Water Yadan landscape, where ancient rock formations appear to float among the water.

A Unique Combination of Desert and Wetland Scenery
The most impressive feature of Wusute Water Yadan is the contrast between the harsh desert environment and the vibrant water landscape.
The golden-brown Yadan hills rise from the lake surface, creating a mysterious scene that changes with the weather and seasons. Under sunlight, the formations display different colors and shadows, making the area a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.
The unusual combination of desert, water, and geological formations has made Wusute Water Yadan one of the most remarkable natural attractions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Bird Paradise – The “Bird Thousand Island Lake”
During spring and autumn, Wusute Water Yadan becomes an important habitat for many species of water birds.
Flocks of birds and wild ducks can be seen flying across the blue sky, swimming in the lakes, or moving among the Yadan formations. Because of this unique ecological environment, local residents traditionally call the area Duck Lake, while many travelers refer to it as the “Bird Thousand Island Lake.”
The coexistence of desert landforms and abundant birdlife creates a rare ecosystem and adds another layer of beauty to the landscape.

Why Visit Usutu Water Yadan Geopark?
Wusute Water Yadan Geopark offers one of the most unique travel experiences in western China. Visitors can witness the extraordinary combination of:
* The world’s largest water Yadan landscape
* Ancient desert geological formations
* Crystal-clear lakes and wetlands
* Rare plateau wildlife
* Stunning sunrise and sunset scenery
For travelers exploring Qinghai, the Qaidam Basin, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Wusute Water Yadan is an unforgettable destination that showcases the incredible power of nature and geological evolution.
