Dandong City Travel Guide
Located in Liaoning Province, near Shenyang, Dandong city is a unique border city situated along the Yalu River, directly facing North Korea. Known as China’s largest border city with North Korea, Dandong offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the fascinating contrast between two countries, explore historical sites, and enjoy beautiful riverside scenery.
With its combination of border landscapes, wartime history, and cultural attractions, Dandong has become one of the most distinctive travel destinations in northeastern China.
1. Yalu River Broken Bridge — A Witness to History
The Yalu River Broken Bridge (Duanqiao) is one of Dandong’s most famous landmarks and an important historical site from the Korean War period.
Originally built between August 1909 and October 1911, the bridge was the first bridge constructed across the Yalu River. The iron bridge was approximately 944.2 meters long and 11 meters wide, supported by 12 arches.
In December 1950, during the Korean War, the bridge was bombed by the US Air Force. The remaining section extends only from the Chinese side into the river, while the North Korean section was destroyed, giving rise to its name “Broken Bridge.”
Today, visitors can walk along the bridge remains, learn about its wartime history, and enjoy panoramic views of the Yalu River and the border landscape.
2. North Korea Border View — A Unique Cross-Border Experience
One of the biggest attractions of Dandong is its close view of the North Korean border. The city is located just across the river from Sinuiju, North Korea, allowing visitors to observe the striking differences between the landscapes and lifestyles on both sides of the river.
There are two popular ways to experience the border scenery:
* Hushan Mountain (Tiger Mountain): From the viewpoint, visitors can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the Yalu River and the North Korean shoreline.
* Yalu River speedboat tour: Departing from the pier near Hushan Mountain, the approximately 30-minute boat ride takes visitors close to the border area and provides a unique perspective of the two countries.
The contrast between the developed Chinese riverside and the quieter North Korean shoreline creates a memorable travel experience.
3. Tiger Mountain Great Wall — The Eastern End of the Ming Great Wall
Located beside the Yalu River, opposite North Korea’s Yuce Island and the old Sinuiju area, the Tiger Mountain Great Wall (Hushan Great Wall) is about 15 kilometers east of downtown Dandong.
Named after Hushan Mountain, the scenic area features a restored section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall stretching approximately 1,250 meters, with the highest point reaching 146.3 meters above sea level.
Built in 1469 during the Ming Dynasty, Tiger Mountain Great Wall is widely considered the eastern starting point of the Ming Great Wall.
Within the scenic area, visitors can also explore the Tiger Mountain Great Wall Museum, one of the four major Great Wall museums in China, which displays the history, construction, and cultural significance of the Great Wall.
With its historic bridges, border scenery, and ancient defensive structures, Dandong is a fascinating destination for travelers interested in history, culture, and unique international landscapes.
