Changbaishan Mountain
Located on the border between China and North Korea, Changbaishan Mountain is one of the most spectacular natural wonders in northeastern China. Known for its volcanic landscapes, pristine forests, alpine lakes, and rich biodiversity, Changbaishan Mountain is a top destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
The rugged terrain of the Changbaishan Mountain Range provides a natural habitat for many rare and endangered animals, including Amur leopards, bears, and Siberian tigers. A large section of the mountain area on the Jilin side has been protected as the Changbaishan Mountain Nature Reserve, which is part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme. Covering more than 2,100 square kilometers, the reserve preserves one of China’s most valuable forest ecosystems.
Tianchi Lake — The Iconic Scenic Spot of Changbaishan Mountain
The most famous attraction on Changbaishan Mountain is Tianchi Lake (Heaven Lake), a breathtaking alpine lake located inside the crater of an ancient volcano.
Sitting at a high altitude, Tianchi Lake covers an area of approximately 13 square kilometers. Its crystal-clear blue water and peaceful surroundings create a stunning mirror-like landscape surrounded by volcanic peaks. The lake has only one outlet on its northern side, where water flows continuously throughout the year and becomes the source of several major rivers in northeastern China.
Among the surrounding peaks, Tianwen Peak stands northeast of Tianchi Lake and is considered one of the best viewpoints for enjoying panoramic views of the lake.
Changbai Waterfall — A Powerful Natural Wonder
Below Tianchi Lake, about 1,250 meters lower, the terrain drops dramatically, forming the magnificent Changbaishan Waterfall with a height of 68 meters.
The waterfall flows throughout the year and offers different scenery in every season. In winter, the falling water freezes instantly in the cold climate, creating spectacular ice formations that look like crystal flowers spreading across the landscape.
Besides Tianchi Lake and Changbai Waterfall, the mountain area is also home to numerous smaller lakes, waterfalls, forests, and volcanic features, making it one of the most diverse scenic areas in China.
Hot Springs and Local Culture
The hot springs of Changbaishan Mountain are another popular attraction. Near the Grand Changbai Waterfall lies a thermal spring area covering about 1,000 square meters, with 13 natural hot springs. The spring water contains minerals such as hydrogen sulfide and has long been valued by visitors seeking relaxation and wellness experiences.
Changbaishan Mountain is also deeply connected with the history and culture of the Manchu people, who regard the region as their ancestral homeland. Today, the area is home to many ethnic Korean communities. The warm hospitality, unique traditions, and local customs provide visitors with a rich cultural experience alongside the natural scenery.
