Hengshan Mountain
Mount Hengshan in HunanMount Hengshan, also known as Nanyue Mountain (Southern Mountain), is one of the most famous sacred mountains in China. Located about 120 kilometers south of Changsha in Hunan Province, Mount Hengshan is one of the Five Great Mountains of China (Wuyue) and has been an important destination for religious pilgrims, nature lovers, and travelers for centuries.
With its combination of magnificent landscapes, ancient temples, and deep cultural traditions, Mount Hengshan is regarded as a holy mountain where Buddhist and Taoist cultures have flourished for more than a thousand years.

Natural Beauty of Mount Hengshan
Mount Hengshan stretches approximately 80 kilometers and features 72 peaks, creating a spectacular mountain landscape. Among them, Zhurong Peak is the highest point, rising 1,298 meters above sea level. Named after the legendary fire god Zhurong, the peak is the most famous landmark on the mountain and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.
The mountain is known for its lush forests, peaceful valleys, mist-covered peaks, and beautiful seasonal landscapes. Although it attracts many visitors throughout the year, its numerous temples, historical sites, and natural beauty make it a worthwhile destination for travelers seeking culture and tranquility.

Nanyue Grand Temple – The Largest Ancient Temple Complex in Southern China
At the foot of Mount Hengshan stands Nanyue Grand Temple, the largest ancient temple complex in southern China and one of the most important cultural landmarks in Hunan Province.
Covering an area of about 100,000 square meters, the temple is one of the largest groups of ancient buildings in Hunan. The original temple is believed to have been built as early as the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), although it was repeatedly rebuilt after several fires.
The current structure mainly dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) and was designed with influences from Beijing’s imperial architectural style. The temple complex consists of nine courtyards, with the main hall being the highlight.
The main hall stands 22 meters high and is supported by 72 stone pillars, symbolizing the 72 peaks of Mount Hengshan. With its red walls, yellow glazed decorations, and grand palace-style architecture, Nanyue Grand Temple is an impressive example of traditional Chinese religious architecture.

Mount Hengshan in Hunan ProvinceHiking and Exploring Mount Hengshan
The main gateway for visiting Mount Hengshan is not Hengshan County but the nearby town of Nanyue. Visitors usually stay in Nanyue before exploring the mountain and visiting Nanyue Grand Temple.
The mountain provides a rewarding hiking experience. Along the trails, visitors can discover numerous Buddhist and Taoist temples hidden among forests and cliffs. A complete hike to the summit, including visits to major temples and returning to Nanyue town, usually takes around 8–10 hours.
The mountain paths are surrounded by peaceful scenery, fresh air, and ancient religious sites, offering travelers a perfect combination of nature and culture.

Famous Temples on Mount Hengshan

Zhurong Palace
Located near the summit of Zhurong Peak, Zhurong Palace is the most famous temple on the mountain. Often surrounded by mist, the temple has a mysterious atmosphere with its solid stone walls and iron roof. It is one of the most memorable places to visit on Mount Hengshan.

Zhusheng Temple
Located near Nanyue town, Zhusheng Temple was built to commemorate a planned imperial visit by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. The temple reflects the close relationship between imperial culture and mountain worship.

Nantai Temple
Built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368), Nantai Temple is an important Buddhist site and is traditionally associated with the development of a Buddhist branch that later spread to Japan.

Fangguang Temple
Known for its peaceful environment and beautiful views, Fangguang Temple is one of the quieter temples on the mountain. Surrounded by natural scenery, it provides visitors with a relaxing spiritual experience.

Visiting Mount Hengshan
Mount Hengshan is a perfect destination for travelers interested in Chinese religion, history, architecture, and natural landscapes. The combination of ancient temples, sacred traditions, mountain scenery, and cultural heritage makes it one of the most remarkable attractions in Hunan Province.
Whether hiking to Zhurong Peak, exploring Nanyue Grand Temple, or experiencing the peaceful atmosphere of ancient temples hidden in the mountains, Mount Hengshan offers a unique journey into China’s spiritual and natural heritage.
