Great Hengshan Temple
Nanyue Grand Temple in Hunan ProvinceNanyue Grand Temple, also known as Great Hengshan Temple, is a famous ancient religious complex located at the northern foot of Mount Hengshan in Nanyue District, Hengyang City, Hunan Province. As one of the most important Taoist temples in China, it is dedicated to the worship of Nanyue Dadi (the Great Emperor of the Southern Sacred Mountain), the guardian spirit of Mount Hengshan.
With its magnificent architecture, long history, and unique religious traditions, Nanyue Grand Temple is one of the most important cultural attractions in Hunan and a significant site for visitors exploring China’s sacred mountains.

History of Nanyue Grand Temple
The exact date of the temple’s original construction remains unknown. According to historical records, an early temple dedicated to Zhurong, the legendary Fire God associated with Mount Hengshan, was originally located at the summit of Zhurong Peak. During the Sui Dynasty (581–618), the temple was moved to the foot of the mountain, where it gradually developed into today’s Nanyue Grand Temple.
During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the temple continued to expand. In 721, Emperor Xuanzong granted Mount Hengshan the title “King Who Governs Heaven (Sitian Wang)”, and in 725, the Perfect Sovereign Shrine was built inside the temple complex. Additional halls and structures were added during later dynasties, especially during the Song Dynasty.
After numerous renovations and expansions, the current temple complex was rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty in 1882 during the Guangxu period. Today, it preserves the traditional layout and architectural style of ancient Chinese religious complexes.

Magnificent Nine-Courtyard Layout
Nanyue Grand Temple stretches from south to north with nine rows of halls and gates, creating a grand palace-like structure. The layout reflects traditional Chinese architectural principles and symbolizes the sacred status of Mount Hengshan.

Lingxing Gate
The first section of the temple is the Lingxing Gate, a stone memorial archway featuring four pillars and three levels. Its design imitates traditional wooden architecture while being constructed with stone.

Kuixing Pavilion
The second section is Kuixing Pavilion, also known as the Winding Dragon Pavilion. The name comes from the wooden dragon carving located on the second floor, which adds artistic value to the structure.

Nanyue Grand Temple in Hunan ProvinceMain Southern Gate
The third section consists of the Main Southern Gate and two side gates. The three-arched design resembles the Chinese character “川” and is also known as the Main Chuan Gate.

Imperial Tablet Pavilion
The fourth section is the Pavilion of the Imperial Tablet, which once housed an inscription written by Kangxi Emperor describing the reconstruction of Nanyue Temple.

Fine Reception Gate
The fifth section is the Fine Reception Gate, a seven-bay building with a traditional hipped roof. Historically, it served as the ceremonial entrance for welcoming important guests.

Tower of Imperial Books
The sixth section is the Tower of Imperial Books, which once stored imperial inscriptions, prayer texts, funeral writings, and records of titles granted to mountain deities.
Unfortunately, many historical treasures were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Today, the tower serves as an exhibition hall displaying more than 200 cultural relics related to Mount Hengshan.

Saintly Emperor’s Hall – The Main Hall of Nanyue Temple
The seventh section is the most important building in the temple complex: the Saintly Emperor’s Hall.
Inside the hall is the statue of Nanyue Sitian Zhaosheng Emperor, identified with Zhurong, the Fire God. Around the hall are 72 stone steles representing the 72 peaks of Mount Hengshan.
The surrounding stone railings are decorated with more than 100 double-sided white marble relief carvings, showcasing impressive traditional Chinese craftsmanship.

Sleeping Hall and Northern Back Gate
The eighth section is the Sleeping Hall, also known as the Back Hall. Statues of the Great Emperor of Southern Sacred Mountain and his wife, Empress Jingming, are placed on the divine throne inside.
The final section is the Northern Back Gate, featuring three bays and traditional single-eave architecture. Nearby are the Hall of Instilling Life and the Hall of Governing Spirit.

A Rare Combination of Taoism and Buddhism
One of the most unique features of Nanyue Grand Temple is the coexistence of Taoist and Buddhist traditions. Eight Taoist temples stand on the eastern side of the complex, while eight Buddhist temples are located on the western side.
This unusual arrangement reflects the religious harmony that developed around Mount Hengshan over centuries. The combination of Taoism, Buddhism, imperial culture, and mountain worship makes Nanyue Grand Temple a rare and valuable example of China’s spiritual heritage.

Visiting Nanyue Grand Temple
As the gateway to Mount Hengshan, Nanyue Grand Temple offers visitors an opportunity to experience ancient Chinese architecture, religious culture, and historical traditions. Its impressive halls, sacred atmosphere, and connection with one of China’s Five Great Mountains make it an essential stop for travelers exploring Hunan.
