Sanyou Cave in Yichang
Sanyou Cave Three Travelers Cave in Yichang Three Gorges ChinaLocated on the northern cliff of Xiling Gorge, about 10 kilometers from downtown Yichang, Hubei Province, Sanyou Cave (三游洞), also known as the Three Travelers Cave, is one of the most famous historical and cultural attractions in the Three Gorges area.
Carved naturally into the steep cliffs overlooking the Yangtze River, Sanyou Cave is renowned for its spectacular scenery, ancient stone inscriptions, and connection with famous Chinese poets and scholars throughout history. It is considered one of the best places to experience the combination of natural landscapes and Chinese cultural heritage along the Three Gorges.

The Legend Behind Sanyou Cave
The name Sanyou Cave, meaning “Cave of the Three Travelers,” comes from the visit of three famous Tang Dynasty (618–907) poets and officials:
* Bai Juyi (白居易)
* Bai Xingjian (白行简)
* Yuan Zhen (元稹)
According to historical records, the three literary figures visited the cave and admired its beautiful scenery, inspiring later generations of poets, writers, and travelers to follow their footsteps.
For centuries, visitors came to Sanyou Cave to appreciate the landscape and leave behind poems and inscriptions. Although many inscriptions have been damaged over time due to natural erosion and human impact, the remaining carvings still provide valuable evidence of China’s rich literary and artistic traditions.

Natural Beauty of Sanyou Cave
The cave was formed through natural erosion over thousands of years. It is approximately:
* 30 meters long
* 23 meters wide
* 9 meters high
Inside the cave, stalagmites divide the space into two chambers. The larger front chamber contains around 40 preserved inscriptions, including works by famous historical figures such as Ouyang Xiu, a renowned writer and scholar of the Song Dynasty (960–1279).
The unique rock formations, peaceful atmosphere, and views of the surrounding mountains make Sanyou Cave a memorable stop for travelers exploring the Three Gorges region.

Ancient Cliff Inscriptions – A Cultural Treasure
One of the greatest highlights of Sanyou Cave is its collection of ancient cliff inscriptions. The flat rock surfaces around the cave display writings left by visitors from different historical periods.
Most inscriptions express admiration for the magnificent scenery of the cave and the Yangtze River landscape. Their styles vary according to different dynasties and individual calligraphic traditions.
Visitors can appreciate examples of traditional Chinese calligraphy styles, including:
* Regular script (Kaishu)
* Clerical script (Lishu)
* Seal script (Zhuanshu)
* Running script (Xingshu)
* Cursive script (Caoshu)
These inscriptions are not only artistic masterpieces but also important records of Chinese history, literature, and calligraphy.

Zhixin Pavilion – A Stunning Yangtze River Viewpoint
From the entrance of Sanyou Cave, a small mountain path leads upward to Zhixin Pavilion. Along the way, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Yangtze River.
Standing at the pavilion, travelers can overlook the magnificent scenery of the Yangtze River winding through the mountains of Xiling Gorge, offering one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Three Gorges region.

Why Visit Sanyou Cave?
With its combination of natural wonders, ancient literature, and breathtaking river views, Sanyou Cave is a must-visit attraction in Yichang and the Three Gorges area. It provides travelers with a unique opportunity to explore China’s ancient culture while enjoying the dramatic landscapes of the Yangtze River.
For visitors interested in Chinese history, traditional poetry, ancient inscriptions, and Three Gorges scenery, Sanyou Cave offers an unforgettable cultural journey.

Ticket Price: about 48 RMB or about 7 or 8 dollars.
Travel: You can take Bus No. 10 at Yichang’s Yuanjiang Avenue (沿江大道) Bus Station.
