Qu Yuan Ancestral Hall in Zigui
Located in Zigui County, Yichang City, Hubei Province, on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, Qu Yuan Ancestral Hall (also known as Qingliegong Ancestral Hall) is an important historical and cultural attraction dedicated to Qu Yuan (340–278 BC), one of the greatest poets in ancient Chinese history.
Situated about 1.5 kilometers from Zigui County, the ancestral hall commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman of the Warring States Period (475–221 BC). He is regarded as the earliest great-known poet in China and is best remembered as the author of the famous poetry collection Chu Ci (Songs of Chu).
Qu Yuan’s loyalty, literary achievements, and patriotic spirit have influenced Chinese culture for more than two thousand years. The annual Dragon Boat Festival is also closely associated with his story.
Architecture of Qu Yuan Ancestral Hall
The ancestral hall features traditional Chinese architectural elements and consists of several main sections, including:
* The entrance hall
* The main hall
* Left and right side halls
* Cultural exhibition areas
The entrance gate is designed in the traditional style of four pillars and three sections. Above the gate are four Chinese characters reading “Qing Lie Gong Ci” (清烈公祠), while the two sides feature the words “Gu Zhong” (古忠, Ancient Loyalty) and “Liu Fang” (流芳, Lasting Fame), representing Qu Yuan’s noble character and enduring reputation.
Ancient Stone Inscriptions and Literary Heritage
One of the highlights of Qu Yuan Ancestral Hall is the collection of stone monuments displayed in the corridors.
These monuments feature poems and writings created by ancient poets and calligraphers who admired and praised Qu Yuan. The inscriptions reflect generations of respect for his literary achievements, moral values, and patriotic spirit.
Visitors can appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese calligraphy while learning about Qu Yuan’s important role in Chinese literature and history.
