Songhua Jiang River
The Songhua Jiang River (Sungari River) is one of the most important rivers in Northeast China and the largest tributary of the Amur River (Heilong River). Flowing through Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, the river plays an important role in the region’s ecology, transportation, agriculture, and cultural development.
Originating from the Changbai Mountains, the Songhua River stretches approximately 1,434 kilometers and drains an area of about 1.44 million square kilometers, making it one of the largest river systems in China.
A Major River of Northeast China
The Songhua River flows through diverse landscapes, including mountains, forests, wetlands, and the vast Manchurian Plain. Along its journey, it passes through important cities such as Jilin City and Harbin, shaping the history and lifestyle of the people living along its banks.
The river system includes the Second Songhua River and the Nen River, two major branches that contribute to the river’s large water volume. The Second Songhua River eventually joins the Amur River at Tongjiang in Heilongjiang Province.
Several large dams, including Baishan Dam, Hongshi Dam, and Fengman Dam, have been built along the river for hydroelectric power generation. The Fengman Dam creates a reservoir extending about 62 kilometers upstream, adding beautiful lake scenery to the region.
Songhua River in Harbin — A Symbol of the City
In Harbin, the Songhua River is one of the city’s most iconic natural landmarks. The river passes through the northern part of the city and provides beautiful scenery throughout the year.
During winter, the river freezes from approximately late November to March, creating a spectacular frozen landscape. The frozen Songhua River becomes an important venue for winter activities, including ice festivals, ice skating, winter sports, and traditional ice entertainment.
The river also provides the ice blocks used for many famous sculptures at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, making it closely connected with Harbin’s world-renowned winter culture.
Natural Landscape and River Navigation
Due to the extremely flat terrain of the Manchurian Plain, the Songhua River has developed many winding curves and bends over thousands of years. These meanders create a unique landscape of wetlands, islands, and former river channels surrounding the river.
The Songhua River has long been an important transportation route. Medium-sized ships can navigate the river up to Harbin, while smaller vessels can travel further along sections of the river near Jilin City and the Nen River toward Qiqihar.
