A Geological Wonder Millions of Years in the Making
The colorful landscape of Zhangye Rainbow Danxia was formed over millions of years through the deposition of sandstone and mineral-rich sediments during the Cretaceous Period, followed by tectonic uplift and continuous erosion by wind and rain.
Iron, copper, and other natural minerals created vivid layers of red, orange, yellow, white, green, and brown, producing the striking rainbow-colored mountains seen today.
The surrounding Zhangye Danxia region represents one of the finest examples of Danxia landforms in China’s arid northwest, where colorful hills and dramatic sandstone formations exist together in one remarkable landscape.

Seven-Colored Aohe Viewpoint
Known for its expansive mountain vistas, this viewpoint is especially beautiful on misty mornings when low clouds drift through the valleys, creating an almost dreamlike landscape.

Seven-Colored Brocade Viewpoint
Named for its colorful layered hills that resemble a beautifully woven silk brocade, this viewing platform highlights the smooth, flowing bands of mineral-rich sandstone that have made Zhangye famous around the world.
