Zhangye Danxia Landform
Located in Zhangye City, Gansu Province, the Zhangye Danxia Landform is one of the most spectacular geological wonders in China. Known as the “Eye Candy of Zhangye” and often called “China’s Rainbow Mountains,” this breathtaking landscape is famous for its colorful mountain ridges, dramatic rock formations, and surreal natural beauty.
Spreading across approximately 400 square kilometers in Linze County and Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, the Zhangye Danxia National Geopark features layers of vividly colored mountains that look like a giant painting created by nature. With its unique combination of geological history and extraordinary scenery, it has become one of the most popular destinations along China’s ancient Silk Road.

The Geological Formation of Zhangye Danxia
The Zhangye Danxia landscape was formed over 6 million years ago through a combination of geological movements and natural erosion.
The spectacular scenery was created from layers of red sandstone and conglomerate rocks that were gradually shaped by:
* Crustal uplift
* Wind erosion
* Water erosion
* Weathering
* Freeze-thaw processes
Over millions of years, these natural forces carved the mountains into unique forms, including:
* Colorful ridges
* Steep cliffs
* Deep valleys
* Layered rock formations
* Wave-like mountain patterns
The exposed rock layers reveal different geological periods, making Zhangye Danxia not only a visual masterpiece but also an important site for geological research.

A Natural Painting of Rainbow Colors
The most impressive feature of Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains is their incredible range of colors.
The mountains display brilliant shades of:
* Red
* Orange
* Yellow
* Green
* Blue
* Purple
The colorful stripes flow across the mountains like brushstrokes on a giant canvas. Depending on the sunlight, weather, and viewing angle, the landscape changes throughout the day, offering visitors a constantly evolving natural spectacle.
Because of this extraordinary appearance, many travelers describe Zhangye Danxia as one of the most beautiful landscapes in China.

Zhangye Danxia: A Must-See Destination on the Silk Road
Located along the historic Silk Road, Zhangye has long been an important cultural and commercial center connecting China with Central Asia.
Today, the Zhangye Danxia Landform has become one of the most iconic attractions in northwestern China, attracting travelers, photographers, and nature lovers from around the world.
Visitors can enjoy:
* Panoramic views from scenic platforms
* Sunrise and sunset photography
* Geological exploration
* Hiking experiences
* The unique scenery of the Hexi Corridor
The combination of ancient Silk Road history and extraordinary natural landscapes makes Zhangye Danxia a truly unforgettable destination.

Best Time to Visit Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains
The best time to visit Zhangye Danxia National Geopark is from May to October, when the weather is relatively comfortable and visibility is usually excellent.
The most beautiful viewing times are:
* Early morning: soft sunlight highlights the colorful layers
* Sunset: warm golden light enhances the red and orange tones of the mountains
Clear days after rainfall often provide especially vivid colors and better photography conditions.

Why Visit Zhangye Danxia Landform?
The Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains offer a rare combination of:
* Millions of years of geological history
* Extraordinary natural colors
* Unique Danxia landforms
* Silk Road cultural heritage
* Unforgettable photography opportunities
Recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful geological landscapes, Zhangye Danxia Landform is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Gansu Province, the Hexi Corridor, or China’s Silk Road route.
