Qingyuan Mountain in Quanzhou
Qingyuan Mountain in Fujian
Located in southeastern Fujian Province, Quanzhou is one of China’s most important historical and cultural cities. Known as the birthplace of Minnan culture, the hometown of overseas Chinese, and the ancestral home of many Taiwanese people, Quanzhou has played a significant role in cultural exchange between China and the world for more than a thousand years.
With its rich collection of historical sites, diverse religious heritage, and unique local traditions, Quanzhou is an excellent destination for travelers interested in Chinese history, architecture, and multicultural experiences.
In ancient times, Quanzhou was the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road and became one of the world’s largest international trading ports during the Song Dynasty (960–1279) and Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). At its peak, it was known as the “largest port in the East” and was considered comparable in importance to Alexandria Port in Egypt.
Today, Quanzhou preserves a remarkable cultural landscape where Chinese traditions and international influences have blended together, making it a unique window into the history of global maritime exchange.

Quanzhou: A City of Multicultural Heritage
As one of China’s first groups of National Historical and Cultural Cities, Quanzhou is famous for its extraordinary cultural diversity. For centuries, merchants and travelers from different parts of Asia, the Middle East, and beyond arrived here through maritime trade routes.
The city became a meeting point of different civilizations, where various religions and cultural traditions coexisted, including:
* Buddhism
* Taoism
* Confucianism
* Islam
* Manichaeism
* Hinduism
Many historic temples, ancient streets, and religious sites remain today, reflecting Quanzhou’s role as an important center of international exchange.
In recognition of its outstanding historical value, Quanzhou was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as “Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China.”

Qingyuan Mountain: A Sacred Mountain Near Quanzhou
Located in the northern suburbs of Quanzhou, only about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the city center, Qingyuan Mountain is one of the most famous natural and cultural attractions in the region.
Known as the “First Mountain of Fujian”, Qingyuan Mountain features rolling peaks, unique rock formations, peaceful forests, and ancient religious sites. The mountain has long been regarded as a place where nature, religion, and culture come together.
The history of Qingyuan Mountain dates back more than 2,000 years. Over time, it became a place influenced by multiple belief systems, especially:
* Confucian culture
* Taoist traditions
* Buddhist practices
Due to Quanzhou’s position as an important maritime trading center, other religions and cultures, including Islam, Manichaeism, and Hinduism, also left traces in the region and gradually integrated with local traditions.

Cultural Highlights of Qingyuan Mountain
Qingyuan Mountain is famous for its combination of natural scenery and historical heritage. Visitors can explore:
* Ancient stone carvings
* Religious monuments
* Historic temples
* Mountain trails with panoramic views of Quanzhou
* Cultural relics reflecting the city’s diverse history
One of the most famous landmarks is the Laojun Rock Statue, a large stone sculpture of Laozi, the founder of Taoism. It is considered one of the most impressive Taoist stone carvings in China and represents the deep connection between Qingyuan Mountain and traditional Chinese philosophy.

Visiting Quanzhou and Qingyuan Mountain
With its ancient ports, multicultural heritage, traditional architecture, and beautiful landscapes, Quanzhou China offers travelers a unique opportunity to discover the history of cultural exchange along the Maritime Silk Road.
A visit to Qingyuan Mountain provides a perfect introduction to the spiritual and natural beauty of the city, while Quanzhou’s temples, historic neighborhoods, and museums reveal the fascinating story of a city that connected China with the world.
For travelers seeking an authentic cultural experience in China, Quanzhou is a destination where history, religion, and maritime civilization come together.
