Beijing Zoo
Located west of the Beijing Exhibition Center, Beijing Zoo is one of the oldest and most famous zoos in China. History of Beijing Zoo
The history of Beijing Zoo dates back more than a century.
During the Qing Dynasty, the area was originally known as the Sanbeizi Gardens. Some historical records suggest that the name was related to Prince Cheng Yin, the third son of Emperor Kangxi, while other accounts connect it with Qing official Fu Kang’an and his private residence.
The area also once contained an imperial garden called the Garden of Happiness and Friendship, built during the Ming Dynasty for Prince Kang.
In 1906, during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, the site was transformed into an agricultural experimental farm and zoo. Known as the Garden of Ten Thousand Animals (Wanshengyuan), it officially opened to the public in 1908, becoming one of the earliest public zoos in China.
Development Through Modern History
After years of social changes and wartime difficulties, the zoo experienced periods of decline. By the time the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, only a small number of animals remained.
The park reopened to visitors in 1950 and was officially renamed Beijing Zoo on April 10, 1955.
Since then, Beijing Zoo has undergone continuous development. New animal houses, exhibition areas, and facilities were built, allowing the zoo to become one of the most important wildlife conservation and education centers in China.
