A Cool Summer Resort in Zhejiang
Moganshan is located on the southern edge of the north subtropical climate zone, featuring four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and a mild mountain climate.
The annual average temperature is around 13.3°C. The average temperature in the coldest month (January) is about 1.4°C, while the hottest month (July) averages only 24.9°C.
During summer, temperatures usually remain below 30°C, making Moganshan around 5°C cooler than nearby cities such as Shanghai and Hangzhou. Thanks to its refreshing climate, the mountain is often known as a “cool and refreshing world” and a famous summer escape destination in China.
Historic Villa Group – The “World Architecture Museum”
One of Moganshan’s most distinctive attractions is its historic villa complex, which reflects the mountain’s international cultural heritage.
Most villas were built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area contains more than 200 countryside villas featuring Western architectural styles, including buildings influenced by American, British, French, German, and Russian designs.
In addition to foreign-style villas, Moganshan also features traditional Chinese architecture, including Hua Hall, Huangmiao Temple, and Linhai Villa. More than 50 modern buildings and renovated historic structures have also been added to the scenic area.
The villas display a variety of architectural styles, from elegant and graceful designs to strong and imposing structures. Because of this unique collection, Moganshan has earned the reputation of “World Architecture Expo” and “Small Villa Exhibition.”
Jianchi (Sword Pool) Waterfall
Jianchi Waterfall, also known as the Four-Level Waterfall, is one of the most famous natural attractions in Moganshan. Hidden in a peaceful mountain valley surrounded by lush greenery, the waterfall creates a spectacular scene of cascading water and natural beauty.
Above the waterfall stands Fuxi Bridge, and about 50 steps upstream is a stone inscription area. Two streams, one originating from Zhonghua Mountain and the other from Luhuang Mountain, merge together before flowing dramatically downward.
The water first forms the upper cascade, then plunges over several cliffs to create multiple levels of waterfalls. After entering Jianchi Pool, the water gathers strength and drops again with a powerful sound, creating a magnificent scene of flying water and mist. The final cascade flows into the mountain stream, completing the four-stage waterfall landscape.
Surrounded by forests, rocks, and clear mountain water, Jianchi Waterfall is one of the best places to appreciate the natural charm of Moganshan.
Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling’s Connection with Moganshan
Moganshan has also played an important role in modern Chinese history. Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling visited Moganshan several times and left historical traces in the area.
On December 1, 1927, Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling held their wedding ceremony in Shanghai. After the wedding, they traveled to Moganshan for their honeymoon.
Later, in 1937, during the negotiations between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling stayed at Baiyun Mountain Pavilion in Moganshan, making the mountain an important historical destination as well as a scenic retreat.
