Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square in Beijing
Tiananmen Square is one of the most famous landmarks in Beijing and a must-visit destination for travelers exploring China’s capital city. Located directly south of the Forbidden City, it is often visited together with the imperial palace as part of a half-day Beijing sightseeing itinerary.
For many Chinese visitors, Tiananmen Square holds deep symbolic meaning. People from across the country come here to take photographs in front of the portrait of Chairman Mao and experience the atmosphere of this historic national landmark.
With its enormous open space, grand architecture, and important role in Chinese history, Tiananmen Square is one of the most recognizable places in Beijing.

The World’s Largest Public Square
Tiananmen Square is widely recognized as one of the largest public squares in the world. Located on Beijing’s central north-south axis, it forms an important part of the city’s historic layout, connecting major landmarks such as the Forbidden City and the Tiananmen Gate Tower.
The square covers an area of approximately 14 hectares, extending about:
* 865 meters from north to south
* Around 500 meters from east to west at the northern end
* Around 370 meters from east to west at the southern end
The vast stone-paved square can accommodate hundreds of thousands of visitors and has hosted many important national ceremonies and public events throughout modern Chinese history.

One of the most popular experiences at Tiananmen Square is watching the national flag-raising ceremony.
The Five-Star Red Flag flies above the center of the northern side of the square. Every morning at sunrise and every evening at sunset, members of the national flag guard march in formation to raise or lower the flag.
The ceremony attracts visitors who gather to watch this solemn and meaningful tradition, making it one of the most memorable moments for many travelers visiting Beijing.

Famous Landmarks Around Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square is surrounded by some of Beijing’s most important historical and cultural buildings.
Major landmarks include:

Monument to the People’s Heroes
Located at the center of the square, this monument commemorates those who contributed to China’s modern history.

Chairman Mao Memorial Hall
Located south of the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the memorial hall is an important historical site in Beijing.

Great Hall of the People
Situated on the western side of the square, this grand building is the venue for major national meetings and ceremonies.

National Museum of China
Located on the eastern side of the square, the museum displays extensive collections covering Chinese history and culture.

Tiananmen Gate Tower
Standing at the northern end of the square, the magnificent gate tower is one of Beijing’s most iconic symbols and the entrance to the Forbidden City.

Zhongshan Park and Imperial Ancestral Temple
Located near Tiananmen Gate, these historic gardens and cultural sites add to the grandeur of the surrounding area.
Together, these buildings create a harmonious architectural landscape that represents the political, cultural, and historical importance of Beijing.

Visiting Tiananmen Square – Travel Tips
Visitors should expect security checks when entering Tiananmen Square, including:
* Identity checks
* Metal detectors
* Security screening equipment
There is also a strong security presence due to the importance of the location. However, the area remains a welcoming destination visited by millions of domestic and international travelers every year.
The best time to visit is usually early morning or late afternoon when the weather is comfortable and the lighting is ideal for photography.

Why Visit Tiananmen Square?
Tiananmen Square is more than just a tourist attraction—it is a place where visitors can experience the history, culture, and spirit of Beijing.
Located along the city’s ancient central axis and surrounded by some of China’s most important landmarks, the square represents the connection between China’s imperial past and modern identity.
