Introduction of Shanghai


Shanghai, is situated in the middle of China’s east coastline. It occupies a total area of 6,341 sq km( Of which Pudong New Area occupies 523 sq km) , which a total resident population of 16,000,000. It has a pleasantzhouzhuang water villageclimate with four distinct seasons. The average temperature is around 18 C and the annual precipitation is 1,240mm.

 

Shanghai, an open city on the coast and a famous historical and cultural city, is a gate to the Yangtze River delta. It is a municipality under the direct jurisdiction of the Central Government, the largest economic and trade center, a comprehensive industrial base and the leading port in China.


Shanghai is well-known in the world not only for its prosperous cosmopolitan feature but also for its rich humanistic resources. In recent years, a number of modern buildings have been added to the city , such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Library , Shanghai Stadium, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Circus City, Shanghai City-Planning Exhibition Hall and Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai Science & Technology Museum. They have become new scenic sights in Shanghai Colorful Festivity, like Shanghai Tourism Festival and Shanghai China International Art Festival; have attracted an increasing number of tourist from home and overseas.

 

Main attractions in Shanghai

 

Jade Buddha Temple


It was first built in 1882.After the 1911 Revolution, it was neglected and rebuilt in the period 1918 to 1928 on the present site. Its two jade Buddhas in 1882 by the monk Huigen from Mount Putuo were first kept in a suburb of Shanghai. The three halls make up the temple complex. These three halls are the Laughing Buddha or Maitreya Hall, Daxiongbaodian or the Precious Hall of the Great Hero and Sanshengdian or the Buddhist Abbot Hall.

The Bund


The Bund ,which extends from Jinling Road in the south to the Waibaidu Bridge over the suzhou Creek in the north, is on the western bank of the 114-kilometer-long Huangpu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River.  Walking along Zhongshan Road, visitors can enjoy the fade grandeur of old Shanghai,for this was the band,where the great trading house and banks had their headquarters.


Longhua Temple


Situated in the southwest part of the city, Longhua Temple is a major attraction of Shanghai. Though its popularity spread only after 1949, for foreigners living here in early 1900s, this biggest and oldest temple in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta is very familiar indeed. Legend has it that it was first built in 242 during the Three Kingdoms period when Sun Quan , King of kingdom wu, had it built to show filial love to his mother. 


Oriental Pearl TV Tower 


Three nine-meter-in- diameter cylinders, which are supported by three tilted standing seven-meter-in-diameter with an oblique angle of 60, tower to the sky. With eleven steel spheres in various size inscribed in an ancient Chinese verse as: Large and small pearls dropping on a plate of jade. On May 1,1994,the 118-meter-high antenna pole was successfully connected with the Tower body in the first attempt sitting between Nanpu Bridge in the south and Yangpu Bridge in the north of the Huangpu River, the Tower is made up of 11balls,the lowest of which is 118 meters high and the tallest being 295 meters.


Nanjing Road


the most bustling shopping center in Shanghai and enjoying the reputation of China No 1 Street. Business hours are from 10 am to 10 pm. Brightly lit Nanjing Road is a wonderful view at night in a sea of lights. From September 1999, Najing Road becomes a pedestrian walking street. 

People’s Square and Shanghai Museum


The people’s square is the political and cultural center of Shanghai, Here are found the Shanghai Museum, the Municipal Hall, the underground shopping arcade, the underground parking ground and Shanghai Grand Theatre. The museum is a comprehensive museum of art, being one of the 4 largest museums in the country. It has a collection of 12,300 pieces in 21 categories of valuable cultural relics. The shape of the building is like a giant bronze tripod, looking graceful and solemn. There are modern facilities in the museum, such as a multi-function lecture hall, sound guiding, etc. 

Shanghai Science& Technology Museum 


There are 6 exhibition halls in Shanghai science & Technology Museum: ¡° Exploring the Earth ¡®s Crust¡±, describing the structure of the earth¡¯s crust; ¡° All Manifestations of Living Beings ¡°, presenting scenes of rain forests, the ¡° Children¡¯s Village ¡°, teaching children the knowledge of the outside or through games, the ¡° Information Paradise¡±  cast by robots , etc. In the central hall there is an exhibition of natural sciences with giant dinosaurs and over ten thousand pieces of specimens. There is a huge three dimensional movie screen and small spheroid 4 D movie open to visitors. 

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium


The theme of Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is ¡° Across Continents-Through Worlds of Water¡± . It displays not only the unique fresh water and ocean creatures, but also endangered aquatic animal¡¯s including many near-extinct species in china and other regions. The highlights include sawfish, Jellyfish, Sunfish, Weedy Sea Dragon. The aquarium has four spectacular underwater viewing tunnels, which enable the visitors to come incredibly close to greet the fishes. The experience is also one of being surrounded by exotic marine creatures while exploring the depth of the ocean. 

Shanghai Old Street


Shanghai Old Street , located on Fangbang Road, Middle , in nanshi District , is 825m long , The architecture and layout of the street from west to east display the historical and cultural evolution during a period from the Ming , Qing Dynasties to the Chinese Republic, when Western culture began to infiltrate into Shanghai. The Management of business is mainly featured by its traditional trade character, emphasizing on traditional folk custom cultures, creating a Shanghai-Style culture atmosphere. Shanghai Lao Jie has become a tourist attraction for its unique style of business culture in Shanghai. 

Yuyuan Garden


A classical garden South of Yangtze with a history of over 400 years . Halls, chambers, towers and pavilions, rocketries and flowing streams all express the essence of the Ming and Qing Dynasty garden architecture of the South. There are more than 40 scenic spots in the garden ingeniously partitioned. Offering visitors a different scene at every step.

Xin Tian Di


 Xin Tian Di will be your closest match to what Lan Kwai Fong is to Hong Kong. Indeed, this ambitious area was build by Hong Kong's Shui On Group and contains stylish and expensive shops, pubs and restaurants. Prices for food generally start at RMB 200 but if you head into the 'mall' complex at Xin Tian Di south, you will find a McDonalds and a few medium-end restaurants where you can save your wallet from certain destruction. The Shikumen houses have been renovated to suit modern tastes and do not resemble anything you will find in traditional Shikumen areas. Shanghai Xin Tian Di is where 'yesterday meets tomorrow in Shanghai today'.


The Old City God’s Temple:


  Old City God's Temple (Laochenghuangmiao)is a major yet relatively inactive, Taoist temple in Shanghai. It is located in the area south of Yan'an Road on the Fangbang Zhong Road.


Zhujiajiao Water Village 


Located in a suburb of Shanghai city, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1700 years. Covering an area of 47 square kilometers, the little fan-shaped town glimmers like a bright pearl in the landscape of lakes and mountains. Endowed with another elegant name - 'Pearl Stream' - the little town is the best-preserved among the four ancient towns in Shanghai. Unique old bridges across bubbling streams, small rivers shaded by willow trees, and houses with courtyards attached all transport people who have been living amidst the bustle and hustle of the modern big city to a brand-new world full of antiquity, leisure and tranquillity.


Tongli Ancient Town


 Tongli is an aged town located a short drive from Suzhou, which is about a hour drive outside of Shanghai. Tongli is over 1000 years old and has only recently been changed into a tourist attraction. The town is characterized by stone bridges and well preserved ancient architecture including private gardens, temples and houses. 15 small river lanes crisscrossed the town, over which spans around 49 stone bridges in variety of styles. Bridges are important parts of the town. The most famous bridges among the 49 bridges in Tongli are the three bridges called Taiping (peace), Jili (luck) and Changqing (celebration) bridges, which has been important landmarks of the place and regarded as the sacred architecture by the locals. Whenever there is an important occasion, such as wedding, people would like to walk through the three bridges, which is supposed to bring peace, fortune and happiness in their lives.
